Urgent: Wissanu, EC to discuss election delay

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam on Thursday met the Election Commission to discuss the possibility of delaying the general election from February 24 so that it would not affect the coronation ceremony set for early May.

He said he would explain to the EC the procedures and preparations concerning the coronation ceremony.

"About half a month before the coronation set for May 4-6, there would be a process to prepare for the ceremony. After the ceremony, some activities would be held about half a month after that," Wissanu told reporters before the meeting.

He would explain the situation to the EC and discuss a possible delay, the deputy prime minister added.

"In case the election is delayed from February, the new date will be issued according to the Constitution, meaning not later than May 9," he said.

The EC would set the new date if it agreed to the postponement, Wissanu said.

What a surprise, and what an extremely lame excuse. Oh well, the way things were going, those elections are completely inconsequential.

The junta isn't going anywhere regardless of when elections are held.

Last night I reported (on the thread, 'Election wins votes as boost for consumer spending for quarter') how a well-informed Thai medical friend of mine had told me that same evening that the election is going to be delayed until after the Coronation. It appears he was right. I said on that thread that this development confirms as correct what I and many others have predicted all along - that there will NOT be an 'election' in February (we even gave, many months back, the precise, specific cause for that delay - which has now come true).

I am sure that the masses of the Thai people will not vociferously complain about this. 'Mai ben rai'. But a few - a very few (relative to population size) - will make their voices heard.

It is so lovely to live in a land where the people display the extraordinary and remarkable patience of a saint. But perhaps there comes a day when even saints have their limit ...

At least this development once more shows that the people in charge ar not only criminal but lying scumbags as well. Including Wisanu, who lost any shred of credibility he had left.

Well if the election is delayed, this is a perfect excuse. No one will dare question it out loud.  But it could backfire and increase resentment.

Good post, Sjaak327. If anyone believes that there will be a 'level electional playing field' - conscientiously and ethically organised by the military junta - then they live in a different Thailand from me!

For some reason…it would appear the Junta is looking for ways to closely associate their own event with the coronation.

It's a lame excuse, they knew full well there was a coronation around the corner when they planned the elections. I fail to see how an election held on 24-2 could have a direct effect on an event held in may, and how such a thing could have been overlooked and ignored all that time.

I couldn't agree more. One has nothing to do with the other and implying otherwise is merely a smokescreen.

But..they  are intimately entwined....?

And so they have been since 2014.

You may see it as lame, but Joe public is unlikely to protest. If it was delayed for any other reason everyone would be up in arms about it. Doing it this way gags the public.

I agree with you that elections in February should not have any impact on any event held in May, but perhaps they are worried about what will happen if the results are not as anticipated/hoped for by those pulling the strings, or there are protests against the results of a far from fair election which could carry over.

I believed that separate organizing committees will be appointed for the preparation and planning. No ministries are involved. Why will the election affect the event. The bad news is sly fox with the John Lennon glasses chair the committees. He is masterminding the delay for his boss who obviously will be “blameless”. I hope a more powerful entity will override that attempt.

Blimey don't know about anyone else but I never seen that coming ..

We all know what's going on here. Has anyone got any more mud, excrement and detritus to throw in the Thai people's faces? They have not had enough yet ...

I assume this means the date of the election will be announced prior to 9th May and not the election taking place as that would be an impossibility.

Like everyone else, totally unsurprised. I wonder how much input the Government had in the choice of date?

Any other events likely to cause a delay?

I can think of at least two. Nobody is getting any younger.

Wow, its almost as if they planned it this way when fixing the February date (where the sarcastic emoji when you need it)

Ah  but it  does because no one is  allowed to  comment on the un-commentable, its the perfect tool that YEARS.......DECADES of training has taught them. Any  comment  or  complaint =Les Majeste

"Any other events likely to cause a delay?"

Maybe a lack of popularity. There was no small amount of anger concerning the watch whitewash.

Sounds like Thailand may be jumping on the UK bandwaggon of promising votes and then delaying them!

  • Popular Post

Wasn't it just yesterday or so that the EC was in the news flatly denying rumors that the election was going to be delayed again? Showing the printed ballots, etc... Even though a royal decree for the election had yet to be issued....

Well, it's not like their credibility, and the rest of the junta, could get any lower than it already is.

  • Popular Post

So the road map is intact.

  • Popular Post

If February 24th was too close to May 4th then what does that say about May 9th.

You have to take your hat off to them for doing such an amazing job of completely lobotomizing an entire nation from birth. The audacity of their lies is just breathtaking.

Thais will take this forever because they quite simply cannot understand what is being down to them...it has been ensured that they can never comprehend anything beyond food and lottery numbers.

I am absolutely certain that 80% of the population probably didn’t even know there was an election scheduled....I am sure some of them don’t even know now they have a military government...

I think the real reason is to allow the political parties more time to campaign.

OK, I'll get my coat

Well, sure....

Tradition. That ain't disappearing soon.

Same as it ever was.

Does anyone here study real Thai contemporary history or able to connect the simple dots?

  • Popular Post

Well, anyone with half a brain has been waiting for the announcement of a delay. Polls do not favour the existing crowd ergo, gots to find a reason not to have the election. Don't worry about foreign governments, they're not my father...

Hey ho. Always going to happen.

Back to our independent lives, per usual...
