The Ministry of Education to host a volunteer-themed Children’s Day 2019 on Saturday, January 12th from 7 AM onward, at its headquarters on Ratchadamnoen Nok Road in the capital.

According to Education Minister Dr. Thirakiat Chareonsetasilp, his ministry, as the leading organization in organizing the event, is keen at raising the public awareness about the importance of children and their needs. He said it is crucial for the authority to make children acknowledge their role in the society, while enticing them to engage in social participation. The minister also said his agency is tasked with developing the youth to become human resources who will contribute to the development of the Kingdom in the future.

Minister Thirakiat then elaborated on the theme of the Ministry’s children’s day this year, which urges children to be selfless by taking on volunteering tasks. According to him, these jobs would sharpen their skills, help them to become happy Good Samaritans. He said the event at the Education Ministry is divided into four zones, namely Kids Think, Kids Do, Happy Kids and Kids Stage.

Quick, get all the tanks out, and the guns, and the bombs - and 'educate' the children that this is the equipment you need when you become a grown-up (puu-yai) to keep all the bad adult Thais in order and under control. 'Educate' them to know that that filthy thing called 'democracy' is only what 'bad people' spread around - and that bombs and guns and tanks are the way to rule a nation.

That's it. Get them young. Get them to OBEY and WAI and volunteer as generals' servants and dogs-bodies. Great stuff. Can't beat it. Real militaristic Thai educational values ...

Ever notice the instinctive ideals of "formal military dress" among Thai educators, civil servants, special elites, etc...less the already uniformed circles of police, tourist police, and the broad sector of military itself. Militarism is forefront in the surface consciousness, yet not strongly accepted by the masses - but go along to get along.

What might Siddharta Gautama have to say?

Excellent post (above). So very true. Even officials and presidents of Thai universities are decked out in militaristic-looking uniforms and often sport 'medals' (pretty little rank-denoting ribbons).

Yes: Buddhism is (so we are told) one of the constituent planks of the Thai nation - so I am sure that the Thai 'educators' are all very familiar with those suttas and vinaya accounts of how the Buddha loved to march around villages in his military uniform, displaying all his medals, brandishing his sword at the slightest 'loss of face' that he suffered, and getting little kids to obey him without question. He also never tired of forcing people to believe everything he said, or else they would be packed off to jail for offending his dignity!

Oh sorry - I may be mistaken - I was just reading a sutta where the Buddha urges people NOT blindly to follow tradition, NOT to believe something just because their teacher or elder has said it to them, and NOT to follow 'specious reasoning'.

Ah! I see my mistake now: that must be another type of Buddhism - not the real  Buddhism - not Thai Buddhism!
