Would anyone know if a CT scan of the colon is available in Bangkok, instead of the camera?  Problem of v occasional bleeding is most probably hemorrhoids. Have had conflicting advice. Many thanks.

A CT scan doesn't tell you all you and the doctor may need to know, a colonoscopy has a much better chance of doing so .  I had a colon CT some time back and as expected, as it showed no abnormalities, and yet I still had the symptoms,  it was advised that I went ahead with a colonoscopy.  So why have a CT scan in the first place was my response.  I never really got a satisfactory answer.

A scan of colon can be part of abdominal CT as have had it done (due cancer search due tumor elsewhere - have no idea if appropriate for you needs).  It was done with fleet enema on CT table and did not require prior laxative treatment but only that you hold it for CT scan time - bathroom adjacent to CT scan room thankfully.  This was at Vejthani Hospital about six months ago.

Abdominal CT inc use of an enema with contrast material can be done but colonoscopy is usually better in case of rectal bleeding and even if you get a CT you may end up still needing the colonoscopy.

In any case do not try to self-prescribe diagnostic tests which, when you finally see a doctor, may nto be what the specialist thinks is needed.

Consult a colorectal specialist to start with.

Prof. Chucheep is excellent, can be seen at Bangkok Christian Hospital on Mondays 1 PM or Bumrungrad Hospital on Thursdays late afternoon/evening. BCH is less expensive than Bumrungrad,

There is nothing to fear in a colonoscopy, you are sedated and don't feel a thing.

In fact, rectal bleeding always requires investigation with recto-colonoscopy. Because, if a CT scan is normal, you still need scopy to find the source of the bleeding. And, if it's abnormal, you also need scopy to take a biopsies, wire loop possible polyps, coagulation therapy for possible angiodysplasia, sclerotherapy for hemorrhoids etc.

I just today received a colonoscopy quotation from Bangkok Christian Hospital and it came in at 35k bht + extras. That is quite high. Much more than BNH. The lowest I have seen was Paolo Hospital which quoted closer to 20k bht + extras.

You have to read the fine print very closely for this procedure - as some will have everything extra and others will include. Biopsy as extra procedure/expense can increase cost greatly.

A friend just had a colonoscopy here, came to about 20K. This was with no specimens taken for biopsy, if there are any that is extra. this was just last month. To get to 35k would have to include overnight admission (not necessary or usual), path exam on multiple specimens etc.

Email or telephone  price quotes from Thai hospitals tend to be all over the map in terms of accuracy.  Sometimes the person replying does not even know what the procedure is and just "guesses".

See Prof. Chucheep. If he recommends colonoscopy (as he probably will) you'll be given a quote then and there and it won't be 35K.

Do NOT make appointment through international service dept. (In any hospital!)

Sheryl, thanks for the good advice. I will meet with the doctor for a quotation.
