I think we have reached that point already. In its current state, the UK is a burden. Unfortunately the ECJ ruled that the EU doesn’t have a say in that.

If the sovereign parliament wishes never to be returned I suppose it could do that.

It’s part of the political process that some MPs will not return because the electorate disagrees with their views. Will happen whatever they decide to do next.
