Trump also claimed he was constitutionally required to give the State of the Union speech.

Another thing to consider. It's not possible for "trump" to speak to a random cross section of unscreened everyday Americans. He would be loudly booed and he knows it. It's hard to imagine a more polarizing president than he is. Of course he could have given a speech to a camera with no audience or he could do another MAWA hat hysterical "Build that wall" propaganda rally but for a state of the union address, but that would have made him look as he actually is -- a weak massively unpopular loser.

There is something (many things really) that I don't quite get.

 

If the hill is not a suitable place for the speech, because of security or Pelosi's fancy for a jab.

Why can't he do the speech televised from Oval office

or White House lawn or Airforce One or whatever?

He could have and that was an option but he's a very poor speaker without an audience to feed on so he has decided to wait until he can enjoy the pomp and circumstance of the traditional venue, the house.

Yes. he caved. He threatened to just show up and the Honorable House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (the most powerful woman in American history) called his bluff and said, dude, I don't invite you, so no you're not. He's not used to being denied by anybody, much less a woman who is vastly superior to him in every way. 

 

The power of NO. "trump" suffered a major loss in the midterms, losing the house in a dramatic way. But con man that he is and always has been, he has been putting on an act that he didn't lose. But he did lose. Nancy Pelosi controls the house. He does not.
