Prawit critic suspects political motive behind attack on his car

A political activist whose car was damaged by fire in the early hours of Saturday suspects the attackers had a political motive.

Ekachai Hongkangwan said on Sunday  that this was the first attack targeting his property, following five physical assaults against him over the past year.

“I am the only political activist who has been assaulted so many times. I have received encouragement to continue with my activism from friends and acquaintances,” Ekachai said.

He added that the latest attack came after he filed a police complaint against a senior military officer.

“I am sure what happened was politically motivated. I have no issues with anyone else in other areas,” he said.

The activist explained that his Nissan Sunny saloon came under attack when parked in front of his house in Bang Kapi district. A security-camera recording showed that at about 3am on Saturday a man in his early 20s poured liquid down the left side of the vehicle then set fire to it before fleeing.

Ekachai said that he would now be taking extra precautions when venturing outside his home. “I may need to make sure I am accompanied when travelling,” he added.

In 2013, Ekachai was convicted of lese majeste, serving two years and eight months in prison before being released in 2015.

He has actively campaigned to call Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan to account over his undeclared collection of luxury wristwatches.

The superintendent of Lat Phrao police station said yesterday that investigators were checking security-camera recordings in the nearby area in order to find to find the perpetrator of the attack. Police Colonel Passakorn Ratanapanadda said police were convinced there was more than one culprit.

Kudos to Ekachai Hongkangwan for having the cojones to stand up and be on WATCH for what he believes.

Yes, I think he would be wise to consider many and various safety measures heretofore.

This was probably just a "shut up, better WATCH your back" warning.

Respect to you, Sir!

I sincerely hope that one day Thailand gives you the recognition and respect that you so dearly deserve.

Stay safe and give'em hell!

Sad thing is Ole Fatty has so many things to hide, his cronies will stop at nothing to silence critics.

Eckachai is lucky so far it has only been physical assaults and damage to his car.

Ole fatty also has a vast volume in which many things may be hidden.

Makes me wonder if ordered from the top, or the sycophants acting on their own doing what the believe is right to score points with their masters.

A rare Thai. A man who has put himself firmly in opposition to an institution that relies on force and brutality to uphold its position in Thai society. It cant be easy for him to stay committed to his cause after seeing those bodies being hauled out of the Mekong. He has my admiration; but that wont keep him safe.

There seem to be 2 sorts of people who get imprisoned on political charges in Thailand, the thuggish types who are often powerful within a certain province or locale and have access to money and political power and the ideological types who don't have access to money or local political power. Bizarrely, the powers-of-the-day in Thailand seem to fear the latter more. They cannot be paid off and they always occupy the moral high ground as every Thai administration is so riddled with theft of national wealth and misuse of state power. I would not be surprised if Ekachai is killed in mysterious circumstances.

Political violence is bad no matter who is a victim. Intimidating people is just totally wrong too bad it happens so often here on all sides. Violence seems to be normal. Good of this guy that he stands up for what he believes in.

Is he sure it is politically motivated?

Cause this is Thailand, and when you park in front of someone elses house/shop they will damage your car also.

Or when you honk your horn to someone driving against traffic which made them lose face, that can result in an attack also.

All joking aside, Thailand needs more people like this (standing up for what is right and wrong).

Akachai, you can only push the hardline barrow for so long and put up with the gutless trash that hide in the shadows, mind you speaking out anywhere in the world attracts this kind of relaliation, take care in your endeavors.

If he has been given that much grief, they must be afraid of him.  Shameful, cowardly and violent acts which should be noted in the upcoming election.

Errrrrr did you not read the OP "The activist explained that his Nissan Sunny saloon came under attack when parked in front of his house in Bang Kapi district."

So much to democracy in this country - what a farce ........

Errrr, he was joking.

If I were his insurance company I would cut this client loose. He walks too close to the cliff edge.

He has been tailed for months and was recently beaten up after attending a anti-government demonstration.

Oops, missed the last bit.

The real fun will follow shortly when it gets nearer to the election date, or possibly soon after.

people have shown they have loyalties to whom ever may be in power.
