Thailand wins ice sculpture contest again

Thailand has again won the grand prize at the 46th International Snow Sculpture contest in Sapporo, Japan, this time with an ice sculpture depicting Siamese fighting fish.

 

 

Earlier this week the fish was approved by the Cabinet to become Thailand’s national aquatic animal. 

 

The Thai ice sculptors, Kusol Bunkobsongserm, Amnauysak Srisuk and Kritsana Wongtes, competed with teams from China, Macau, South Korea, Hawaii, Indonesia, Poland, Singapore and Finland in the annual four-day contest.

 

 

It was the eighth top award for Thailand since the first victory in 2000. It is the 22nd year of Thai participation since 1991 in one of Japan’s most popular winter events, visited by over 2 million tourists.

Thai artists deserve a lot of praise.   They are like the Jamaican Bob Sled team, only more talented.

Great sculpture, though perhaps it should have been a shoal of fighting fish, taking turns to kick another fish in the head.
