true..... but the diagonals are skewed, which is why I miscounted in the first place

I'll get out 'My First Jigsaw' set after breakfast and see if it works with solid blocks, which it won't

Ok you beet me to it. I dont think i would have made such a full reply but if you hold a straight bit of paper along the long side of the triangle in the first fig you will see that it isnt a straight line , so all these little bits add up to one square.
