Israeli gunfire kills Gaza teenager during border protests

GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian teenager and wounded around 40 others at a protest attended by thousands on the Gaza Strip border on Friday, Gaza health officials said.

Israel's military said it was acting against rioters, some of whom tried throwing grenades and explosive devices into Israel from the Gaza Strip, a territory controlled by the Islamist group Hamas.

More than 220 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops since weekly border demonstrations began in March 2018, and thousands wounded. One Israeli soldier was killed by a Palestinian sniper.

Dubbed The Great March of Return, the protests call for the right to return to lands from which their ancestors fled or were forced to flee in 1948 during Israel's founding.

Protesters are also calling for an end to a grinding Israeli-led blockade of Gaza, an enclave home to two million people.

Gaza's health ministry said a 15-year-old boy died after being shot by Israeli gunfire. An Israeli army spokeswoman said soldiers had used "riot dispersal means" and opened fire "in accordance with standard operating procedures."

He could have been doing lots of things or non of the things any of us might imagine.

All the more reason for an open and transparent public inquiry into

his killing.

Nothing to hide, nothing to fear.

Just out of interest , are you calling for a public inquiry into the recent similar deaths in Venezuela ?

Rhetoric aside, what these protestors want is scary. The "right of return" to ancestral lands.... what a horrible precedent to set.  Their ancestors gambled on the losing side of a war. Sorry, but that's the way it goes.

...Sorry, but that's not the way it goes. That may have been OK for Attila the Hun, but this is the 21st Century where we have the rule of international law. Refugees have the right under the Geneva Convention to return to their homes.

70% of the entire Gazan Palestinian population were either born in what is now Israel or their parents or grandparents were, and have been ethnically cleansed by mainly European colonizers. Their homes are just across the fence.

It is a war crime to fire live ammunition at refugees to prevent them returning to their homes.

The only reason they are being prevented from returning is pure racism.

The "right of return" is a Palestinian delusion with no basis in international law. The initial exodus of Palestinians from Israel was voluntary. They left at the behest of the armies attacking Israel, so that the six Arab nations invading Israel could exterminate the Jews remaining without worrying about killing any Arabs by mistake.

He could have been trying to place explosives next to the border fence , blowing a hole in the fence enabling a charge of people into Israel ?

yeah, 15 years old john rambo and his 14 years old friend was trying to bomb the fence so millions of palestnians can flock to Israel and get their stolen land back?

do you honestly believe this? do you honestly believe those kids were throwing granades?

They are not but it's actually a good point. International attention is often focused in a very unbalanced way towards the admitted faults in Israel government policy relative to other nations where the faults are often much more severe, yet you rarely hear the same vile, hateful rhetoric against nations other than Israel. A good example is China and how they are now treating a large minority, putting them in camps. Horrible of course, but nobody is saying China doesn't have a right to exist or that they should have never existed. Cheers.

i am criticising china everywhere for their Nazi style detention camps. western hypocrites do nothing bc they are muslim.

SO, if they were christian or jew, what will be the reaction of those so called western countries like US or Europe? be frank. they will be all over.

same as Israel.

I also throw the same type of criticism to bigot arabs and muslims too.

But you? will you accept the fact and bloodshed originated by Israel?

Will you accept the fact that Israel, still to this day, grabbing and occupying Palestinians land?

well...be fair then.

Don't let facts get in the way of a good story, right?

Is it a war crime to set off bombs on public buses or open markets full of non combatants?

Amazing how the resident anti-Semitic troll shows up on every thread about Israel.

It was not Israelis that put him at the border or forced him to be there or forced him to throw stones or molotov cocktails, just as it was Israelis who forced his parents to let him go there and was not Israelis who kept him from staying at home

War crime according to you? or to whom? it is racist not to allow violent mob to enter your home?Perhaps red carpet along with some tea would be appropriate?

For me, of course. They are different topics however.

Israel has illegally stolen land and continues to build towns in Palestinian land.

And all with the support of US which vetoes UN admonitions.

Murduro is an illegally elected dictator that, along with his cronies

has systematically raped his country of the resources. Only the elite are doing more than exist.

Now he has upped his totalitarianism into shooting his own people. He is scum and so are all of his associates.

Hope he runs to his supporters in Cuba, Mexico or Bolivia. 3 shining examples of safe, economic and political stability.

And how pray tell how did it suddenly become Israeli land when they had not had a seat of government in this land since Darius the Persian.

All maps, even during Ottoman times referred to it as Palestine. The people there are the same people there that have always lived there.

The British who administered it after WW1 called it Palestine. (They never owned the land, it was administered after a bloody war)

Jordan never controlled all of this land, just parts of Jerusalem.

Which incidentally the Jews kept after Yom Kippur. And parts of Syria and they keep on illegally stealing land, not by war acquisition,

But by brutal evictions of Palestinians from their houses and land. Which US has totally supported. (History of the Middle East 1A.)

The whole West Bank was under Jordanian administration prior to 1967 when they waged war against Israel , Jordan lost the war and lost the West Bank .
