We are married Canadians. He 57, She 58.

He is gainfully employed OUT of Thailand, but by virtue of his occupation travels into the country on a corporate declaration once a month for up to 18 days, then leaves the country to work outside. The company provides transport in and out and he is shown on the corporate declaration.

She is retired but could teach if required. We are both looking at wanting to live in Phuket on a long term basis.

So...how would this work?

Does he require a tourist visa anyways so that when the time comes, he can reside permanently?

What type of documentation does she require to reside for an extended period of time?

Any information would be much appreciated as we are trying to decide on our situation. We plan on moving to Thailand (if possible) at the end of 2007.

Thanks for your help!

First of all will say I have no idea what a "corporate declaration" is so will not address that point.

The question seems to be how to live in Thailand and as you are over age 50 the retirement extension of stay would be the logical choice unless you indeed "need" to work. On retirement a work permit would not normally be available.

For retirement you need 800k baht in a Thai bank account for 3 months or 65k monthly pension or a combination of the two. Spouse would become dependent and able to also enjoy one year extensions of stay with no deposit required. For travel a re-entry permit would be required and a yearly multi entry type could cost 3,800 baht.

Retirement applicant could do the visa process in Canada (it is called a non immigrant O-A visa) and use money in a bank account there for the first year and receive a permitted to stay stamp for one year on entry. This requires medical and police check paperwork but should not be that much of a problem. Otherwise you need to set up a bank account here on a visit and have for 3 months prior to application and if not on a non immigrant visa that also has to be changed here.

The wife could get a retirement extension in her own right.

Then I'm not sure if he would be able to get a 1 year multi entry "O" for the purpose of visiting family? It's worth enquiring. He would be able to do that (If possible) ubtil he is ready to retire.

Otherwise can he not continue entering Thailand in the same way that he is now?
