Court acquits 21 yellow-shirt leaders over 2008 siege of Parliament

The Criminal Court on Monday acquitted 21 leaders of the now-defunct yellow-shirt movement in a case concerning the besieging of Parliament back in 2008.

The 21 leaders of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) had been accused of five crimes, including sedition.

The lawsuit stemmed from an October 2008 protest in which they led thousands of protesters to besiege the Parliament compound and block parliamentary members, Cabinet ministers and the then-prime minister, Somchai Wongsawat, from entering the chamber.

The demonstration escalated into a clash between security officers and protesters, resulting in injuries and damage to parliamentary properties.

Among the 21 found not guilty were five core PAD leaders who had already been imprisoned for other charges related to anti-government demonstrations at the time, including former media mogul Sondhi Limthongkul.

The court ruled that the political speeches made during the October 2008 protest had only been informative, providing facts concerning relations between the Somchai government and fugitive former PM Thaksin Shinawatra and their attempt to bring Thaksin back to Thailand.

Hence, the protest was deemed to have been peaceful and protected by constitutional rights as a way to scrutinise politicians by giving information to the people, the court said in acquitting the 21 protest leaders of the charges against them.

Great 11 years later finally a verdict, the law works far to slow here. They should really move faster so people get their punishment (or not) but at least things can't be stalled forever.

Making haste at high speed - not.

Pity the law there doesn't suffered brake failure like the transport industry, results would be achieved on a more regular basis.

Is it the right ruling though?

Seems fair, the 5 leaders are going to jail the lower people will get off. Now lets see what happens with the red shirts if something similar happens then it was a fair ruling. But I guess we got a couple more years to wait. ????

At least the verdict wasn't politically motivated ???? ????

After the world wide financial crisis in 2008 nobody was charged so guess there is some vague justice here, or am i trying too hard to stop "bitching" about our gracious hosts? ????

None other than Thaksin. The redshirts were a violent bunch, committing murders almost daily until the coup came along with Prayut restoring law and order.

Really a well conceived plan by creating and instigating violence for Prayut to seize power claiming to restore law and order. Go ask Suthep.

What a shock!
Until there is a truly apolitical color blind judiciary, Thailand is always destined to be a banana republic...with of course , he who cannot be mentioned hehehe
Good luck! Even the almighty USA doesn't have an apolitical supreme court.

So you don't believe any of the violence, in 2008 and 2014 was instigated by the Shins, their cronies or their violent street thugs? Perhaps you think the Black Shirted armed mercenaries were really double-agents who infiltrated the peaceful Shin gangs?

The common denominator were Thaksin puppets in government trying to pervert justice and get him back to Thailand a free, pardoned, and above the law individual.

There were violence perpetrated by both colours. No one can deny that. As to the Black shirts association with UDD and Shins, you need to stick to the fact that the police investigation reveal nothing even with their arrest of 8 suspects. The amnesty bill followed the law and ceased when the upper house didn't support the bill due to the massive demonstration. Why you persist to regurgitate something that you already know.

Don’t feed the troll !

Some people don’t get it that the very same people who supported and helped Thaksin to power and bent the laws and corrupted courts to keep him in power until he became too powerful - are the very same people he is trying to defend here.

Google “I had to swallow my blood writing this” and it all becomes clearer - the criminals behind the scenes are still the same.

Sondhi is also one of the best examples - a thieving scoundrel who only turned against Thaksin when he cut him off but billions in loans had already been lost because of his corrupt and criminal business practices.

By the way - Last week there was an earthquake in Lampang - it was definitely the fugitive Thaksin’s fault!!!!
