Are computers breeding a human race destined for extinction?

Think about it-

People don't use their brains any more- they use a machine to do everything. School kids use a machine to learn on- can they function without it?

Automation makes people lazy and fat- we can't even wind up our car window anymore. Before computers far as I remember there were no gyms, and hardly anyone was fat. People did outdoor stuff, now they sit in a room and play games on a machine. They don't even need to visit friends- just talk on the phone instead.

When I was living in LOS I spent far too much time on the computer or watching a machine ( tv ). Trying to make up for the year of sloth now, though I still spend too much time on line- it's addictive; I admit it.

Automation makes people unemployed. They sit at home and watch tv or play games on their machine.

Automation allows people to do everything without talking to another person. Automated petrol stations, automated check outs at the supermarket, automated parking buildings. Don't even need to go to the shops- buy everything on line, and soon it'll be delivered by drone- no need to talk to a delivery guy.

WHEN the computers don't work ( hacking, sun flare, EMP, cyberwarfare, etc ), everything will stop working- water plants, power stations, transportation ( cars are computerised ), etc etc etc all computerised.

IMO the human race has doomed itself by putting too much reliance on machines, and it's all going to go wrong, bigly.

Comments please.

It is inevitable that machines will take over most work related tasks in the not too distant future.  People are already becoming obsolete and the world's resources are being consumed by humans at an unsustainable rate.  The world is being used as a garbage dump by everyone...everywhere...machines can solve problems faster, consume few resources...and do not require a commode to stay clean...no more sexual harrassment...????

Yes too much automation in so many aspects, "the computer says" is the final word.

Daaaaam my spell chekar he not work!  Cannot tok to kno one now!

OP, if human hearts stop working, all humanity dies ! did you think about that?

it's quite ridiculous to imagine all computers everywhere would stop working, there is no possible physical scenario in which all computers would be affected.

Read 'The Machine Stops' by E.M. Forster.

Also wrote 'Howards End'.

OK so you've been watching Terminator films again. ????

Using my cell phone and computer for menial tasks gives me a lot more time for important things like breeding future geniuses.

The savages who haven't figured out how to use modern technology will be left in the dust looking for jobs as motorcycle taxi drivers.

Hasn't it gone wrong already? A friend of mine in USA said, 'telephones have replaced family'

I was also at a restaurant last night.  700 baht per person Japanese buffet.  300 seat dining room.  The place was almost full.  Average age 30 t0 40.  Few kids and fewer old people.  The people ate and took photos of the cooks cooking the food for the buffet.

Pretty typical new age dining experience.  My table was me and 4 women.  We went to the buffet and ate and talked and the ladies posted photos of the food on facebook.  Got a couple of hundred likes.

Human race is fine. My sister from America called during dinner but no one really noticed as had one earbud in and could answer and end the call by tapping my ear.

I don’t know if you’ve ever tried ski-jumping? I know I haven’t, but I know that being a ski jumper is like being an alcoholic; when you get to the slippery slope it’s far too late to turn back, and you might as well put your trepidation behind you and go for it!  Slippery slopes are no place for querulous indecision

A massive burst of Gamma-Rays from an exploding star aiming at us would just do that. Among other things, whatever depends on electricity would not work anymore.
But that's not so bad. The remaining microbes and some cock roaches can do without computers and electricity.

What a wonderful world - just like Louis Armstrong song,  "I see grass so green, red roses too, I see them bloom for me and you, what a wonderful world."

I honestly think it would be better for computer to take over this world because we fail to do a good job. So the human race die out and computer take over, what a wonderful world.

Are machines taking over otherwise? Well I went to a Mcdonalds today and as many people know they have kiosks these days. Now at the kiosk was a girl whose only job was to try to get you to use the kiosk. So her job is to train us to one day make us do it by habit and the only point of her job is to make what she does obsolete as quickly as possible.

They also are beginning to use people in countries like India to do drive thrus. They can't quite eliminate this job but they can easily do it cheaper now. People who mine coal are told they are useless pieces of dung and advised to learn to code, which will never happen.

Truck drivers and taxis (including Uber etc.) will be out of business very soon. I think something like 11 million people drive trucks and they will be the easiest to replace. Pilots for the most part are only still around because they provide piece of mind on planes that a human can intervene. The human ironically is much more likely to actually crash the plane.

Picking stocks is being taken over by the algorithms, it seems one day you won't need a human.

Cashiers of any kind won't be needed as amazon and others eliminate their positions. Tax accountants as well are no longer that necessary for the average guy. Just file online.

Today's programmers will eventually be replaced by software that writes software. Much like the GUI made it accessible for the average guy to use a computer just about anybody will be able to grab a code out of a library and push execute to add features to whatever they want. The average 12 year old will be so much more gifted that if you plan to keep that fat coding job in ten years you had better constantly learn.

The world should lose about 2/3 of it's population if not more. Any of you that have a kid particularly more than one. Shame on you, that's the most selfish thing you can do. Then you come crying about how others need to cut back because your kids futures aren't going to be bright. Try this... stop breeding.

The only positions I can rely think of that must remain are lawyers and politicians. So yeah pretty bleak. Somebody will have to regulate the computers and the others will have to litigate subsequent regulations. Those two fields will be the only two that are illogical to the point that machines can not speak that language.

A typical scenario went thus; family of four walks in. Young parents, mid 30's? plus girl and boy, around 12ish.

All four sat through the entertainment (Philippine duo) looking at their phones, not speaking to each other. Mum was worst, chatting on video, laughing and joking loudly.

Sorry to be such a dinosaur but where is the art of conversation? what example are the parents setting?

Are you sure you're just posting food pics to Instagram or the like? Pretty sad at the best of times IMHO.

It's everywhere, infecting everyone. Can't put the phone down for 10 mins. Sad.

At that point my decision has been well and truly made.

Whatever the cost. Some things you can't back off from.

You would have been the same if the tech was available when you were young.

i grew up in a mining town in Western Autralia when black and white television was introduced. Howls of the breakdown of society as most people socialised with backyard barbecues because there was nothing else to do. The world didn't end, we adjusted. We used to go to the drive in movies, great time until VHS came out and killed that. Them we had movie nights at a friends place, Vis face way to dvd's downloaded movies instantly killed that too. Adapt, adjust or....i

Ive still got 80 record albums and a couple record players gathering dust for sentimental reasons. I remember my father giving me a wind up record player when I was 6 or so that he brought home. The needles were really needles. HMV I think. No electronics just 78 rpm, needle and the sound thing. Colonel bogey still brings back memories.

what was bob Dylan that song.   The times they are a changing etc sink like a stone?

 Back on topic.

No computers will never take over.

Computers are dumb. They can't even multiply and divide. They can only add and subtract. That is what the do.

However they can do this very fast, mind bogglingly fast which is where it gets interesting.

Computer programmes on the other hand are a different kettle of fish entirely.

Articial Intelligence is part of our lives right now whether you choose to believe that or not.

And it will become more intrusive. Ask the Chinese about social credits.

I think the answer to the OP's question is 'no', human beings will become extinct by their own stupidity.

Apart from chickens, humans are the dumbest species on the planet.

Example: humans need oxygen to sustain life. Only a really dumb species would cut down the oxygen generators in favour of producing food and biofuels for an ever-expanding population.
