I don't think that the UK wants any sympathy from anybody, but to say that "The xenophobia againgst EU citizens has also left deep scars" is being a little melodramitic to say the least. For the last 3 years mainly the people of the UK who democratically voted to leave the EU, have had a copious amount of abuse, ridicule and snide remarks thrown our way by some Eumainers, not all. We don't dislike the Europeans from the mainland, on the contrary, I am sure most of us have many friends from mainland Europe, and for me that will never change. But the problem is the EU, not the Europeans, we in the UK must look at the EU with different coloured specticles than you, you obviously don't share the same concerns as we do about losing our identity in this great big global world. Our decision, our choice. Don't look back in anger, I hear you say.

From an European perspective, that’s my first priority, and ideally I’d like it to happen under a deal. Even better would be if the deal was ratified not only by parliament but also by the people, of course. But a referendum would very likely mean that the UK would remain in the EU and that would be my biggest nightmare given how deeply divided, dysfunctional and full of clowns the UK is at the moment, unfortunately. The UK has always been half in and half out, and was never fully committed to the European idea, unfortunately. Of course, I understand that’s not what the people of the UK want. For them the best would be to remain. However, our doors will stay open and we will welcome back the UK as a fully committed member once it got rid of all the Brexit cancer. Trying to find something positive in Brexit in light of businesses leaving and politicians making a fool of themselves, the people will now be able to experience and learn firsthand what happens when you listen to the lies and false promises of some manipulating extremists. Of course, I understand that’s not what the people of the UK want. For them the best would be to remain. That's what comes of having a "European perspective". You clearly don't understand the British people or what they actually want.

There is no xenophobia towards EU citizens among ordinary, decent Brits - which includes the vast majority of Brexiteers. The same, sadly, cannot be said for a mainly pro-Remain media and their unscrupulous propagandists. Brexiteers' beef is with the EU's globalist political agenda, systematically robbing member nations of their political and legal independence and facilitating mass immigration on a scale which is causing deleterious social and cultural, as well as economic, consequences.. Leave campaigners have made it clear that any withdrawal agreement must respect and protect the rights of EU/British citizens whichever side of the Channel they may be on.
