A while ago i went to Immigration in Maehongson, to make enquiries about getting a "married"extension to my visa. The very nice chap in charge was very helpful, and gave a list of documents needed, and told me to open a Thai bank account showing a minimum of 40,000 baht/ month.

I asked about the confirming letter from my ( British ) embassy, and he said that it was NOT really necessary.

SO,....on Friday afternoon , I went to Maehongson, armed with all the stated paperwork.

The very nice chap was not there, but the chappie in charge took one look at the papers, and told me that it could not be processed in MHS, and that I had to go to Chiang Mai.

The following Monday, we arrived at the imm office....and it was packed full.

We signed in, and the clerk had a quick look at the papers, and told us that we needed a letter from the embassy, she also told us that it could be issued at the consulate in CM, and there was no need to use the Bankok Embassy for that purpose.

Toddled around to the consulate, was greeted by very polite and helpful staff, who issued the necessary letter whilst we waited, in fact, less than an hour!

Back then to Imm,where the same clerk had a quiet word with us, and advised us to forget doing it that day, but to return on Tuesday, when, she assured us, it would be much quieter, and quicker.

We took her advice, and the next day was at Imm just before 9..when we "booked in".......a few minutes later we were called into the office, where a very pleasant lady went through the papers with us...then back outside to await the next stage.

Our wait was not long, only a few minutes, and then we were interviewed by a higher ranking lady...who also was very pleasant and helpful.

After a short while, we were told to come back in one month to get the official decision, and by 10 o'clock we were in the car, and on the way home.

All very quick, and, all in all, quite a good experience, especially after reading all those negative reports on TV

Lucky you.

Don`t expect an answer in a month though. It usually takes another couple of monthly reports. Also expect a visit to check that you actually do live together.

The hardest part is over though.

I just did mine for the fourth time. It gets easier because they know who you are. This year I got the stamp in a month and they didn't visit the house.

Out of interest does it make a difference as to what nationality you are and age? How long is the visa for as well?

Thanks,

Thanks,

I know not if age or nationality makes any difference.

I applied for the 'married visa' as I cannot ,at present, show 800 K Baht in a bank account, and providing evidence of a sufficient monthly income was the easier option.

The extension will , if granted, be for one year.

Hi

Can you tell me what kind of papers the UK Consulate required to issue the letter ? Only copies of your bank book ? Any other papers ?

Thanks

Applicants for first time [marriage] extensions, should bear in mind some of the essentials required by BKK Imm.

;Letter/Statement from embassy about your monthly income. You must show proof to the embassy.

;A copy of the Affirmation of freedom to marry, which you lodged at the ampur office, when you registered your marriage.

;Pics of your cultural marriage,[if you had one]

Pics of your house, including number and of you and your wife in the living room, sitting on the sofa, plus pics of your bedroom/wardrobe showing yours and her clothes.

The imm oficer will ask to see these.

Considering we have been together for 4 years and my wife has also been in my home country with me,

these are some questions the officer,[male] asked my wife.

' Does he speak Thai'.

'Did he go out last night.'

'If he did, what time did he come back.'

'Did he stay with you all night.'

My thai is very basic, so it was all over my head, or there would have been mayhem in there.

Your passport will be stamped 'Thai Wife' and you get a 30 day stamp while under consideration.

All this was pre 07. No one visited the house and I received the extension no problem.
