Washington State Senator Doug Ericksen on Friday met with Prime Minister Hun Sen at the Peace Palace, where he lauded last year’s national election as “free, just and non-violent” and a reflection of the will of Cambodian people. Last year, Mr Ericksen led a delegation of US officials to observe the national election on July 29.

Eang Sophalleth, assistant of Mr Hun Sen, on Friday said Mr Ericksen congratulated the government for last year’s peaceful election. Mr Sophalleth said Mr Ericksen also noted Cambodia’s rapid development under the CPP-led government.

“Mr Ericksen congratulated the CPP for receiving its victory and lauded the government under the leadership of Samdech Hun Sen that garnered peace and development,” Mr Sophalleth said. Mr Hun Sen’s Facebook page last week said Mr Erickson’s visit to Cambodia is intended to build a better relationship with the US.

The US and Cambodia recently inked a minor military co-operation deal concerning training etc.

Meanwhile, Cambodia is under fresh threat from the EU of withdrawing its special near-tariff-free trade deal due to Cambodia's horrific human rights record the past few years. Cambodia sends 40% of its exports (mostly textiles) to EU nations for a $5.5 billion yield. It's got till next year to clean up its act. You can imagine HE's reaction. He was not polite.

That would be Republican State Senator and former leader of President Donald Trump’s state campaign.

Oddly, the White House press office denounced the Cambodian election as “neither free nor fair.”

When EU talk about human rights you better run and have an eye on your wallet. They usually use their definition of "human rights" to let others work for their welfare.

Get some control over the maritime silk road, I'd guess. In competition with East Asia.

Cambodia is the new buffer state.

There is China to the north.

There is America to the south.

(There are 20,000 US marines stationed in Darwin).

There is Thailand to the west.

There is Vietnam to the east.

In the days of empire Siam was the buffer state

between the French and the British.
