Coalition delays announcement on forming new govt

Six anti-junta parties arrived at the Lancaster Hotel for a press conference announcing the formation of a new government coalition on Wednesday morning.

 

The six potential coalition partners are Pheu Thai, Future Forward, Seri Ruam Thai, Puea Chat, Prachachat, and Phalang Puangchon Thai. The New Economics Party led by Mingkwan Sangsuwan had yet to arrive though he had earlier posted on Facebook that his stance remained unchanged.

 

Mingkwan has repeatedly stated his opposition to the junta.

 

The press conference was postponed from previously planned start of 10am. A Pheu Thai official said that the parties were writing a joint statement.

 

The bloc needs to muster at least 251 MPs to have a chance of forming a coalition government and condemning the junta to opposition.

I don't know if a coalition government will actually be able to get their way with the house stacked with generals, but it still feels like the people are making a statement here.

Does Prayut become just a civilian after this?

As of 24 August 2014 Prayut held three positions at the same time: army chief, NCPO leader, and prime minister, before retiring from the army chief post in October 2014. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prayut_Chan-o-cha

If he doesn't continue as PM after the 2019 election and establishment of a new government results in NCPO's dissolution in accordance to the Constitution, Prayut becomes a civilian.

will be interesting to see if thaksin gets a say on what they actually do or if the coalition parties will actually stick with their policies and not just do this for a place at the trough. Would be very disappointing to see the future forward party become the money forward party after showing promise, this could ruin them very quickly if they drop their principles/policies to favour what thaksin wants, they need to be a steadying hand to ensure there is no corruption

Yes, and he is quite outspoken, so I give it a year..

Maybe he calls for another election make sure that he wins this time. Meanwhile, he remains as PM for another year, another year and another year and so on......till he made all he needs for his generation. Then will be a coup.
