118 taxi drivers fined for alleged passenger-cheating offences

I use taxis on and off infrequently for places where parking is hard to get. I find all these 25 years of using taxis, I can count with one hand the number of times I have had a bad experience with them. I find them courteous and well mannered. Even those who are gruff and impersonal so long as they get me to my place in peace and safely, I can live with that. Be mindful that places like terminal 21, nana, suk ,grand palace area generally have a different sub culture of taxi drivers. And the time of the day matters too.

If you are traveling, you would find taxi drivers all over the world both good and bad. Certain entertainment areas more bad than good. Tourist patronage areas, more bad than good. You just have to take it with the flow ...both good and bad. Celebrate the good and forget the bad. Life goes on.

And until this is done, I'm taking Grab or plainly refuse the cheat who refuses the meter and waive for the next one.

T

That is the best way to hurt them. Normally they have to queue for up-to 1 hour to get a passenger. Once they have driven out of the queue they have to queue again.

Not if you live in Pattaya and Phuket where they are all bad. Impossible to get a meter taxi in these areas because they are backed up by the RTP.

Bangkok at least has a balance and you have a choice.

Let's get real here. A 1000bht fine for refusing a ride, no meter etc. is a joke.. Drop litter anywhere or smoke in an undesignated area attracts a 2000-5000bht fine.. A paltry 1000bht fine for taxis should start at 10k Bht first offence and then to 50k for repeat offenders with cancellation of taxi license..

Totally agree

You're just speculating about something that is hypothetical, maybe none for all you know, maybe some.

"...knowing full-well that nothing would be done".

What?  Did you not notice that something has been done?  That's the point of the thread!

I can include myself at least 5+ times in that speculation because I didn't know about the complaint phone number. Now I only use Grab and motorbike taxi.

You can't get a taxi meter they don't want turn meter on in jomtien area

why not do something about that

Next time you get a taxi to Pattaya, ask to be dropped-off at the end if Soi 9 on beach road; I think that might just prompt the meter to switch itself on.

I moved from Phuket because I could not go where I wanted to, due to drunk, crazy dangerous, rip off taxis. They beat up tourists there, in Kata beach, in full view of everyone, daytime, because a tourist dared park near them. ( it wasn’t parking for taxis, and the tourist didn’t know the danger he was in ) The taxis stopped the launch of a leagal public service bus to Patong , the police did nothing. Not only the tourists suffered, the locals couldn’t get back and forth to their jobs. I had awful experiences and finally gave up, left my lovely home there and moved .The police, authorities, did nothing, and probably never will.

News flash........ Honest taxi driver gave back a tourist his bag containing 500.000 baht, gold watch, credit cards.

Photo taken outside the Grand Palace, sadly unavailable.:cheesy:

I left a brand new camera £300 in a Bangkok taxi I'd just bought it in Dubai that morning. The driver called me back over outside the AVANA hotel (where we had booked online) pointing to my brand new camera on the floor in front of the front passenger seat. To be honest I was surprised & shocked going by previous experiences with Bangkok taxi drivers I didn't think it possible to find an honest one

Uh...I think they missed a few?

If there is so many problems with taxis it seems like more effort would be made to solve the issues. This appears to be more eyewash than anything else.

Yep, these goons are just paying their taxes and then go on with business as usual as soon as everything is forgiven and forgotten
