Rutnin eye hospital

Hello everybody

 

I think this hospital has been recommended as the best for eyes issues..

My husband s eyes are very fragile and in very bad condition.. We would like to go and check with the best specialist available there.. Does anybody have a reco, of course for an english speaking doctor ??
Is it quite easy to get an appointment and are they normally on time ? (we come from Chonburi and prefer to know if the appointment time will be respected of if we have to be ready for a long wait

Can you explain what exactly his eye condition is? As the doctors there gave sub-specialties.

Thank you for your dedication..

He has a long eyes history.. left eye cataract surgery when he was 40 years old (25 years ago), then a retina detachement in 2005, in 2013 the intraocular lense put for the cataract broke.. They removed it and tried to put again an intra ocular lens but went very bad, had to go back to eye hospital 5 times for bleeding and minor surgeries and finally lense was removed after struggling nearly 6 months.. Had to go to europe in 2016 to make a peeling as some skin had grown in this eye and here in Thailand they did not want to touch..Now he has a lense +10 + glasses on this eye, so vision is very low

Other eye, cataract surgery in 2009 with intra ocular lens.. Has also glasses for this eye.. Changed his glasses 5 months back and now for approximately one month, says vision is not clear at all..

He can read a book .. meaning he can see when it is black on white pages.. BUT has difficulties on computer and Ipad.. and for example on a menu card in a restaurant friday, written in brown on yellow pages, wasn t able to read it..

He thinks may be some skin grew on this eye and maybe needs a laser sequence for it.. but not sure if it is so.. we need him to be diagnosed and in case if it is so, the laser sequence to be done

You can telephone for an appointment, from my experience appointments run pretty much on schedule, in fact they state that anyone late for an appointment could find themselves dropping down on the waiting list. They all speak English there.

On arrival you will be asked about any problems, following this upstairs for eye test - reading numbers off the computer screen and eye pressure. From there to one of the doctors for examination, I would think that if a specialist is required it would be at this stage that one would be recommended.

Dr. Roy Chumdermpadetsuk is good choice.

US trained and US board certified. You can read his full CV on bumrungrad website but will cost less to see him at Rutnin and he will also receive a more detailed eye exam there, theydo that routinely.

Tuesdays Wednesdays and Fridays.

Can make appt online www.rutnin.com or call if you want it quicker (but be prepared for some difficulty getting an English speaker)

Sounds like he may have posterior capsule opacification (PCO) (AKA "secondary cataract"; skin tissue overgrows the part of the lens capsule not removed in cataract surgery). Treatment is laser and Dr. Roy can do it, in fact did so for my sister who had same problem.

Hello everybody and particularly Sheryl

 

We went yesterday to Rutnin Hospital and met Dr Roy..

We were greatly impressed as well in terms of personality/human being and apparent professional qualities..

He made the laser beginning of the afternoon and we have to go back for checking mid June..

All run smoothly.. However I want to point out a few points..

. we had appointment with him at 10 and were there at 8.30 (as we come from far, did not want to take a chance of reaching late)..

. At 10, all checks were over and we were told Doctor had not reached and was on his way AND .. that there was 6 patients before us..!! SO, be ready for a long wait..

. Apparently he quickly checked the files of the patients when reached because we were told 30 minutes later that he had ordered a few more checks (3000 bahts) he recommended to do before seeing him, which we of course agreed..

. we finally met him at 11.30 as checks were over when he was ready to take us..

. He took his time to go through the history and offered to do the laser the same day and announced 1.30 hour wait, which was agreed..

We finally went out of the hospital at 2 p.m.. Cost 10.400 bahts which seems reasonable for the checks and job done

As I said my husband does not see from the other eye (or very few with +10 lens and glasses) as the change of intraocular lense went wrong and lense had to be removed

3 doctors said nothing could be done and they did not recomend to try and put another intraocular lense..

Dr Roy has a different opinion and said he would recomend to try.. of course not sure it could work but would agree to try as it is not good to rely on one eye only (which is also my feeling by the way).. Cost would be between 100 and 130 K bahts.. Decision has to be taken by the patient considering pros and cons

All together a very good experience, and very much different from the one we had in Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, where the lady retina specialist is arrogant and has no consideration for the patients..

Thanks for the update and glad to heR it went well. I have been consistently happy with Dr. Roy.

The patient scheduling function at Rutnin is highly inefficient and as a result people do often have long waits. Conversely I was once told a particular doctor's schedule was full and begged and pleaded to get added as a standby as my sister was in town only that one day. We showed up prepared for very long wait only to be seen immediately with no other patients waiting at all. Go figure.

For those who put highest priority on efficient appointment scheduling Bumrungrad is a better choice but will cost considerably more and you will not get as rhorough a set of tests as at Rutnin.

This is all normal for Thailand. But compare this to the U.S. You got a total exam, doctor consultation with results, all the same day. That would never happen in the West.

First of all I american, so I don t compare with the US..

I was not complaining but informing others, as one of the answers told that the patoents schedule was well followed, but it is not and people have to organize themselves for a long wait..
