Pattaya Beach crisis: "Very concerning and potential damage to tourism" as stop gap measures announced

Officials scurried to Pattaya beach yesterday to survey the damage caused by rains to the brand new 400 million baht sands.

Chief of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Jatuporn Burutphat was in conference with the deputy mayor and the harbor department at the scene.

Pictures on Sophon TV on Facebook showed backhoes at work and much fresh sand now in place.

But nothing could hide the fact this was just a stop gap measure and cosmetics.

Jatuporn said the situation was very concerning and the pictures on social media looked simply awful.

He spoke of the potential for damage to tourism.

He repeated the blame game saying mother nature was the culprit: "We can't do anything about that", he said.

He discussed what to do with the Harbor Department and City Hall outlining a number of measures that included the placing of "Big Bags" of sand on the sidewalk and on the beach to prevent further erosion in up to a dozen areas.

The first main thing to do, he said, was to sort out drainage problems in the city and on beach road so that flood water flows where it is meant to go - and not all over the beach.

These initial measures must be done first before a budget of 105 million is sought over the next 1 to 2 years to improve drainage in the wider area of Pattaya.

Thaivisa notes that Pattaya residents will be keeping a close eye on what happens in the beach area next time there is serious rain as experienced in the last few days.

More than 400 million baht was spent on sand on a 2.8 kilometer stretch from North to South Pattaya, a project that was only recently finished and faced its first heavy rain test this week.

It failed abysmally.

So why waste 400 million Baht on something they 'can't do anything about'?

Looks like this weeks hard-of-learning award winner.

Some magic sand is now required mixed 3 to 1 with some cement or 2 to 1 to survive the next shower ????

Who the hell needs this beautiful beach? Firm it up and make a big parking spot for tour busses out of it.

I think your right sadly and as sand is not flammable options are further limited one of those could be bigger grain sand ie rocks????

There are decades worth of rainfall data for most of Thailand including Pattaya. All they had to do is calculate the rainfall for the coverage area then design and build drainage to handle the water flow. Most competent professional civil engineers can easily do this job.

It seems someone other than professional engineers are deciding on the drainage design. The people authorizing the work aren't following the advice and recommendations of professionals who are qualified to design and build.

Remember the old promenade pre 2013? The promenade was raised on the side next to the beach to protect the beach from the flooding....The beach NEVER flooded except in the lowered sections.....Sure there were gullies on the beach but no Grand Canyons because the trees they that they chain sawed down stopped the erosion........

Hey I have many pictures of the pre 2013 beach I could show them....I guess the pre 2013 beach has been erased from their memory...

Perhaps there is a different result - the percentage of the backhander increases each time?

Just how long does it take to "sort out drainage problems" so far its been over thirty years that I am aware off.

Some people? would be embarrassed by the shear incompetence involved - not them - happy to   ????

It's as much about engineering as no helmet fines are about safety... take a guess what has driven this project and will drive future projects regardless of how ridiculous they may seem....

Right well end this stupid face issue and employ some top consultants who actually know what they're doing in the first place from Europe, the States or Australia and do it now

So you think using sandbags as a wall in the sea was a good idea? Those will last forever right?

The scheme was put together by one of Bangkok's top universities!! Draw your own conclusion from that.

But one thing I will say is that when my daughter is of the age for higher education, if she chooses to go to university it will without question not be in this country if I am paying for it.

Just bring your daughter to the beach and let her build a sandcastle....wait untill the tide changes and tell her to protect the castle from the waves....she'll learn more from that than on that BKK university.

Within 5-10 years all that sand will be washed in the sea with a wall from sandbags...amazing Thailand, they have the brains of 3 year old kids.

Sorry to spoil the party, but just one dishonest taxi, 1 rude immigration officer and 1 waiter cheat in a restaurant overcharging does far...far more damage to the image of a country then a natural disaster.

Not to forget the overrated and artificially inflated strong Thai Bhat, that will further deter tourists and retirees to spend their money here. Wake up.
