83 motorcyclists arrested, 79 bikes seized in road racing clampdown

By The Nation

Police arrested 83 motorcyclists and seized 79 motorcycles on Friday that were found to have been illegally modified for road racing.

Pol Maj Gen Nithitorn Jintakanon, traffic police chief of the Metropolitan Police, said the arrests were made throughout Friday night by police manning checkpoints on roads in Metropolitan Police Division 5.

He said 34 of the arrested are under 18.

He added that one suspect under 18 and a suspect above 18 were found to have abused drug.

On Friday, police also checked 28 motorcycle repair shops in the same jurisdiction and seized two illegal exhaust pipes that could emit noise louder than the legal limit.

Nithithorn said police also suspended the use of 28 big-bike motorcycles for 30 days after they were found to make noise louder than the legal limit.

Ok, so what? They fine them 500 baht, give the bikes back, and let them go.

If they were REALLY serious, the fine would be FIVE THOUSAND baht, license suspended for one year, and the bikes CRUSHED,

Let the kids roll and enjoy. They will be too old soon and give it up.

This story seems to be a ''running saga'', much like the staged honest taxi drivers....

Herein lies the real problem. You can crush as many bikes as you like but a new generation is waiting in the wings to take over. You're not dealing with a fixed target, it's a moving target. I suppose the declining birthrate might mitigate the problem somewhat. Anyway, what's so bad about road racing? I can think of a lot worse ways youngsters can express their "joie de vivre".

And the numbers always seem to be the same, high 70's to low 80's and always odd numbers and always happens on a Friday night. I think it must be the same media release that is programmed to pop out at regular intervals.

how about catching firelighters first? stooooopid!

Garrote the little bastards.
