Zero tolerance for drunk bus drivers at Songkran

Thailand's Department of Land Transport has said that bus drivers caught with absolutely any alcohol in their system at Songkran will be immediately replaced.

Even if they are not over the legal limit for driving they could still face charges from the DLT in line with their procedures.

And the operators of the services would also be held accountable, said DLT deputy Kamon Buranapong yesterday.

The move is part of measures to try and limit the number of deaths from alcohol related accidents at Songkran.

Kamon said that the many fatalities in the average daily death toll of 60 can be put down to alcohol consumption.

Such fatalities become 80-120 per day during the holidays, he noted.

Any bus driver with more than 0% alcohol in their system will therefore be replaced immediately.

Charges against them and operators may follow later.

In other news 69 million baht is being spent in campaigns over the next few weeks until May to reach out to the Thai public trying to get them to stop drink driving.

This along with nearly 200 checkpoints and the mobilization of 200,000 police is hoped to make a dent in the annual road carnage that is Songkran.

With 200,000 police doing roadblock checks traffic will be so backed up nobody will be going fast enough to hurt themselves. Tricky bunch these bib.

C'mon now, getting all serious and definite about punishment wouldn't be very "sanook" would it? It is Songkran, after all. ????

Most buses will already be in the customary on its side position before Songkran starts no doubt ????

I'm more concearned by "replaced by who" - the yaba-guys, or already inebriated drivers, who had tests hours ago? :burp:

no because THEY never thought of this !!!

What about talking on their cell phones or on yaba or speeding or... checking the buses for safety ( good breaks & tires)??? -oops, this is being too pro-active. Words only & no action.

So you have to chose a private car.

Unbelievable !! There should be zero tolerance at any time .\

Only a goose makes statements like that

Zero tolerance for ALL drunk drivers!

Will it be strictly enforced? I have my doubts...

Zero tolerance for ALL drunk drivers. Period!

Will the letter of Law be strictly enforced? I have my doubts...

Law is abused and disrespected by the majority of Thai including a minority of farang.

What is the Police for?

To protect and serve or victamise tourists turning a bind eye to most Thai law breakers?

How about "Zero tolerance for drunk bus drivers"?

And this has to be stated? It's not understood and implicit?

And we don't want to talk now about all those other drivers....how many?  1, 2, 5 million?

Come on now, one thing at a time please.

Shouldn't that be 365 days of the year?

Ahhh they are not going to fine the bus drivers 200 baht are they if they find him drunk behind the wheel with a pile of dead passengers. That would be grossly unfair having to pay such a large fine.

I will believe it when I see it. A few years ago in Ko Chang, there was a police check. The driver in front fell out his car drunk as a skunk. The police fined him I believe 400 baht. He then got back in his car and went on his way.

You could not make it up.

Yup; replaced by a Yaba head who watches Porno Movies while he's driving or someone who will drink anyway before the return journey !
