"Chauvinistic"  looks more like you are blaming the victim.  However, by being low key and diplomatic about certain things the knowledge about the world and its dangers is not there. Some of those famous guidebooks backpackers use, spend a good deal of time, papering over dangers. It's in thier self interest to do it this way. No doubt countries might threaten to prevent sales of their book in their country IF they were a little more realistic.  It's win win for them but might not be in the best interests of the backpacker traveler types.

Not just guidebooks, but some websites with traveler's  boards too. Years ago I posted what I thought were reasonable & prudent suggestions for staying safe while touring in Thailand. Got a message from admin complaining about my "wet blanket" attitude and less than Pollyanna view. I thought "F'em. They can't handle the truth" and never posted there again

Southeast Asia is a very conservative area of the world. Respect their culture or just stay home. I don,t know how many times i have seen half naked women walking down main street

Hahaha you are funny! Conservative ? For crying out loud this happened near Pattaya probably the most “Conservative” City in the world - a city that lives of and thrives on a gigantic sex industry!
What culture you want them to respect ? The culture of beer bars, massage parlors, GoGo-Bars and brothels?
Nothing wrong with that I am not judging - but don’t give us the “conservative” spiel! Are you for real?

How does seeing a woman walking down Main Street “half naked” make you feel? Uncomfortable? Angry? Ashamed? Intimidated? If it does then there might be something wrong with you but not with the women.
The bikini was invented in the 1950’s hardly anything new.

How would you like to see women walking down Main Street to the beach? All dressed and covered up? Saudi Arabia would be a nice country for you to live then.

Traffic accidents excepted, Thailand is a far safer place than the UK. The idea that a single young woman should be trolloping about the globe has always been insane, and hopefully these high profile incidents will put an end to the practice.

Mysogynist much?

The island is infested with red worms and should be shunned for this reason alone.

I have been on Koh Chang several times and there is a sinister underbelly of thugs that have one single goal - young western naïve women - just like Koh Tao

Said it before and will repeat, the difference in these small islands is that you have Thais and farangs constantly in social situations drinking because that is how it is - the bars are packed with westerners and thais the latter have a sinister goal that is directed at young western women - rejection is a bitter pill to swallow in front of their mates and abuse happens all too frequently.

In places like Pattaya you rarely see Thai men mixing in bars with westerners - they have their own areas where they socialise which are often out of bounds to farangs unless invited - I have been to some of these places (in Thai company) and was the only farang present

Thailand, ranked within the top 20 most dangerous places in the world to visit.

Why do people go there? For what? Rape? Death? Extortion?

Sadly for me my depandents young childten are in Thailand, that is the only sad reason I put up with the daily BS and injustice.

The majority of Thai do not like farang. Why are people so blind.! The majority of Thai are racist too. Thai tolerate farang, but for one reason only, MONEY! It's that simple.

Farang are honey potted and honey dicked for one reason only, MONEY!

Farang are victamized and treated very unfairly. Those who've lived in Thailand for many years, as I have, will understand what Im taking about... All that Wai cxxp and smiles get you nowhere. We are ATMs. Low life in their eyes.

In my opinion, it is going to get much worse...

It's a shame that in the 21st century we still have these uncivilised countries where women are not free to wear what they want for fear of sexual assault from men who cannot control their base urges or are empowered by some mythical religious cult that deems women inferior and brands them as chattle.

quote of the month and 100% correct, and they let tens of thousands of them into the UK and other EU countries, not politically correct to talk about grooming gangs etc but once they are convicted and the lid is off and they are displayed in the media - it is not hard to work out were they all originated and what their religion is. Yes they preach "western values (laws) are destroying Islam - anyone need that interpreted for them

Western ladies are certainly more independent in mind, body and finances than they used to be. And far more adventurous. But the West is hardly a safe environment anymore is it?

The issue is that most people, male or female, like to relax much more whilst on holiday, take far more chances, drop their guards and don't want to worry about the risks.

I must have missed the part where it said this woman was doing anything other than riding a motorcycle around Ko Si Chang when she was attacked. I find the reference to single young woman trolloping offensive. Based on Pattaya and Chiang Mai news reporting, I would say far more men, albeit older one's, are attacked (truly admitted by them at Police stations when filing reports) when out trolloping.

Rubbish.

Thailand has far higher gun crime and murder rates than the UK for starters.

Surely you are not saying more guns mean more murders using guns?

In every country that I've lived, worked, visited that's the same. Young men who want to take advantage of naive young ladies. In countries/cities/towns/islands that attract tourists the young men have additional opportunities with lots of foreign ladies, relaxing on holiday, letting their hair down enjoying themselves, and being much less worried about risks etc.

The Spaniards, Greeks, Italian young men all used to prey on the tourists from Northern Europe. Indians prey on all women, IME.

Not a Thai phenomenon.

You  mean the world where you  only have to look at  a  woman and  its sexual discrimination and where the courts  will go crazy to convict you, so the little dears  are protected to an incredible  degree.

Then they come here and think all the world is  like  that.

adults generally believe they can look after themselves and make sure they are safe - when you are out enjoying yourself sometimes that last thing to think about is getting home until you step outside and realise, this young woman did the right thing ignoring this scumbag but didn't realise the danger she may be in and made a poor choice of what to do next - she should have immediately sought help

I lived in the UAE. In conservative Abu Dhabi ladies are very safe. Anyone who messes will get put in prison and if foreign deported after serving their sentence. There is a big prison which is built underground. Not pleasant. Someone once honked is car horn at my wife as she was going to a embassy meeting early one evening. I mentioned to a senior Emirati colleague, just in passing. Late he asked if we had a note of the registration. He'd spoken with a relative who was a very senior policeman. If we had the number and wanted to report it, that idiot would have been kicked out the country after being punished. All ladies are treated with respect their. And yes, there are large numbers of working girls there. But anyone who confuses the difference will be very sorry.

In India and Pakistan women are treated terribly. Groped on public transport, teased with cat-calls etc. Such that many are driven to suicide. Hindu, Christian, Muslim or atheist, makes no difference there.

It's not about religion. It's about certain countries, their culture, and their attitudes to women, the law, their religion and their believes which makes them worse than others.

But rapists, sexual perverts, deviants, and sexual law breakers come from every nationality and creed.

Men throughout Asia take loosing face and therefore rejection very poorly.

India is far far worse I can assure you IME.

What practice is that? Freedom of choice? Who decides?

Agree, my niece went to Koh Tao, but she was with her mate. A woman travelling alone is just an open target for predator males. Of course, us males tavelling alone have our our own problem with predator females, but waking up minus wallet isn't quite the same as being raped and murdered.

Yes, this is the dress code that has been used in Thailand by women for a very long time.

Perhaps you should try other locations than beer bars...

If the death penalty is not a deterrent, then maybe you could tell us what is the option to deter violent individuals from offending?

Personally if the death penalty wouldn't work for them, I can not see anything else working. Removing these people from society is the only way forward, and with such scum as we see here, what could be better than making that removal permanent and irreversible?

Torture is a better deterrent than quick death. At least, that is what the research says. Pain is always a deterrent.

They (the women) made their choise when they left the kitchen and joined the left wing mee too groups.
