Yes a 3.5 km section of the proposed Bangkok to Korat line is completed, so I believe. I can't see trains achieving high speeds along here. There is already a rail crossing over the Mekong between Nong Khai and Laos. is another one necessary?

Would you have a link or reference regarding that? I can't find anything so far.

Given that it's regarded as an important first section, I would have thought that it would be over all over press, but ever since it began it has been unnaturally quiet about the construction.

As I recall, China is loaning funds for the project to both Laos and Thailand. China itself will not carry any risk of economic failure as China might in a joint venture. Laos

has committed certain natural resources as loan collateral and Thailand has accepted a relatively high 20-year loan interest rate higher than its own sovereign interest rate.

Nice bit of glossing over of Thailand's construction which appears to be struggling to match even 1% of the Sino-Laos project .. And 3.5 kilometres is not even enough for a burn out in a HST ..

I have just returned from Cambodia via the Poipet/Aranphrayathet border crossing. Yes, the railway between Thailand and Cambodia is linked but at the moment the track is set in the concrete of the forecourt of one of the large casinos (like a tramway). There are no guard fences, the line is completely "open" and gambling punters are able to freely enter the casino. When through trains eventually run there will need to be serious Health & Safety issues addressed to avoid pedestrians being run over. Perhaps a railway police officer with a red flag and a whistle will escort the train, like the early Victorian trains in the UK and today's trains over the River Kwai Bridge at Kanchanaburi. Maybe a new "Casino Halt" will be built.

Thailand never learn from the '97 financial meltdown when the huge foreign debts became unbearable with the sliding Baht. Now it looks like they are again repeating the same mistake.
