Thai death penalty threat over floating home sparks 'seasteading' debate

Featured Replies

I'm confused over the mention of a spar.  Was it used in anchoring the structure to the sea floor.  That would seem to mean the sea is very shallow in that area.  Is that correct?

Some community members have opposed the project on environmental grounds and fears that it will only benefit a wealthy few.

These are valid concerns for all countries considering the concept, said Peter Newman, a professor at the Curtin University's Sustainability Policy Institute in Australia.

"Seasteading is entirely elitist. It's a wealthy person's plaything, and has nothing to do with solving the problems of climate change," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

What do they do with their No:2's or panty liners?

There’s a million random words I could look up but as the random words “contiguous zone” didn’t appear in the article I’ll pass, thank you.

Really. And if this floating dog house threatens Thai "sovereignty" then the nation is already at a loss that no number of Chinese submarines can recover.

Whoever thought up this legal boondoggle really needs a hobby.

They must be projecting that thousands will follow suit. ????

Shame the Thai Authorities on Social Media and wait for a chain reaction to happen :whistling:

Well well.

I'm most surprised and shocked that the Thai navy have done this.

Who would have ever thought, that this would be the

out come. !!!!!!!!!!  :w00t::cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

Perhaps they thought that the Rohingya that the Royal Thai Navy pulled out to sea and cast them adrift without power would take refuge there when they (the RTN) do it again  ? So far sighted and thoughtful the Thai military.

Interesting report and a what a good idea too. So much for Thailands commitment to new technology plus ideas.

Ah but not a local idea. No money going into the correct pockets.

Soon will see the exact same thing but "sponsored" by different people and touted as a local idea. Buy Elite Visa for xx get free permit to Seastead? IF the vessel is registered and you have  Thai Master's Certificate ( available at another price)

But like most things here the root cause is likely the opening of floodgates and the resultant influx of Singapore/HongKong/mainland Chinese who would then align their Seasteads with ???? and claim their own 200 kms Economic Zone.

The guy is an American who made money in crypto currency, the world's greatest ever pump and dump scheme. Now he may have a tax burden.  As a US citizen he can be taxed in the US, in Thailand, or most any tax jurisdiction thanks to US global tax them to death laws.

Wonder if one reason he wants to be outside of any national jurisdiction is because of money?

Correct.  And he's urging people to join his free revolution because, erm, he sells these things for $150 - $200k each.

Seasteading is ridiculous. How do you think the US would react if the Chinese or Russians set up shop 12 miles off the Florida Keys. Waste disposal of all kinds. It the couple considered themselves outside Thai jurisdiction they would have to have stamped in and out of immigration  (including his Thai partner) the same as to would going to Myanmar or Malaysia.  Of course, Thais may feel they have jurisdiction and then they would not have to check in and out. The seasteaders can't have it both ways. but then neither can Thai authorities. Either way, his visa has been revoked, he has not reported his whereabouts as is required by law, he has probably has violated waste disposal regulations. Facing a death sentence, not probable,  a lengthy jail sentence and lifetime blacklisting, highly likely.

Apparently he does not own it. See the press release from the builder.

And who owns Ocean Builders?  It would appear that he does.

"Ocean Builders will be building 20 more with our first 20 customers".

"We've proved [sic] the concept, we will build many more"

And of course the YouTube channel has a link to donate to their cause.  There are some gullible people out there.  For all those people in here upset at what the nasty Thais have done to them, feel free to chip in:  https://www.seasteading.org/donate/

The Thais admit they were in international waters but within their exclusive economic zone,,okay but if the couple weren’t commercial fishing what’s the problem. There was a mention of navigational hazard and that would have needed addressing.
I guess it was easier to threaten to execute them and be done with it.

It's the precedent. If one person is doing it, then before long you'll have half of the 3rd world camped 13 mils off the coast. When the next typhoon comes thru, you'll have a million deadbeats wanted to be rescued.

The other issue is sovereignity. Sitting just outside of thai territorial waters would be ideal for international drug traffickers, to escape the law.

I say give them the death penalty. Publicise it widely, then after all the attention has died down, pardon them.

"crypto wealth" + setting up base in international waters to evade all laws = international Drug  trafficker.

So glad to be at home and avoiding all the "hoo haa" that you spend your time on a forum about Thailand reading about all the "hoo haa".

Ummm ok.

Go ahead, let’s see them execute them-see what happens.  What do they think of the Chinese taking everyone’s land, and building their own islands ????
