BANGKOK, 29 April 2019 (NNT) -The government has long placed importance on the issue of intellectual property infringement, and has worked tirelessly to put an end to it. The United States has recently praised Thailand’s ongoing protection of intellectual property which has yielded concrete results.

Deputy Commerce Minister, Chutima Bunyaprapasara disclosed today that the United States Trade Representative had announced the status of protection of intellectual property of major trading partners under US trade law 2019. This year, Thailand has maintained its place on the watch list after the United States upgraded Thailand from the Priority Watch List to the Watch List in 2017.

The United States has expressed admiration for the policies and advances in Thailand’s protection efforts and its suppression of intellectual property infringement, as the Thai government’s senior leader has placed importance on the protection of intellectual property, suppression of intellectual property infringement, closely supervised and followed up on progress in the operation related to this issue, and actively cooperated with the relevant agencies to suppress intellectual property infringement. This has led to concrete results such as increased efficiency in intellectual property registration, an international trademark registration system under the Madrid Protocol, proposed amendments to the patents’ law and suppression of infringements in both the market and on the Internet.

Ms. Chutima thanked the relevant agencies in both the government and private sectors for their industrious collaboration. She urged them to strive to maintain the intellectual property system, especially the suppression of infringements and legal improvements. Not only does it enhance confidence in trade and investment of US investors, but also encourages Thai people to recognize the importance of intellectual property, and use it for commercial purposes more, as it is a factor in driving competition and economic development of the country creating stability, prosperity and sustainability.

But at the founding of the republic, America took all the IP they could from Europe.  Now that it is one of the most litigious places on earth, they have helped give rise to the patent troll.

Patents are fine.  Secrets are better.

...and in a last minute approach the location for the duly press conference for this announcement was changed from Sukhumvit to the Deputy Commerce Minister's office because of the heat.

America was like the modern day China and profited from industrial spying on friend and foe.

Or said another way, Thailand still bears close watching.

Scary thought, given how well it worked for the US.

Once again we have a Thai Government spokesperson saying   xyzc said this, usually this is their interpretation(for the masses)of what was actually said.I may have read this wrong, but there seems to be no direct quotes from the American statement "Praising" Thailand.

Then again you never hear a Government spokesperson quoting anything that is critical of Thailand unless they say they are wrong and that they do not understand Thailand.

My wife worked for a law firm in Bangkok that specialised in Intellectual Property infringments for 7 years. Part of their job was to accompany police on raids when the clients of the law firm paid for them to litigate IP offences. 9 times out of 10 the raids yielded zero results because the stall holders or shops were informed of the upcoming raid by either someone within the law firm or the pseudo cops.

Seriously are the authorities form both sides dumb or blind????? Just go to the higher floors of MBK, Shops At Siam Square, Basement of Central Lardphrao, Basement of Seacon Square, Top Floor Paradise Park, JJ Mall, etc....fprom pirated US Movies and Series,Software, to fashion labels, sports goods, pirated and fake pharmaceuticals, etc. Is this meant to be some kind of joke? Seriously?????

When are these agreements ever about what's in black and white?  In a back room somewhere, Thailand gave some US mega-corporation something, and in return got to keep their place on the IP watch list, instead of going back down to the IP double secret probation list.  Or maybe Thailand agreed to keep looking the other way as the US keeps secretly rendering prisoners to black ops prisons in the Isaan hinterlands.

We'll never know what really happened.
