To date, 2019 is shaping up to be a slightly volatile year for tourism to the island.

Passenger arrivals at Phuket International Airport rose 1% year-on-year in January, but took a step backwards in February with a substantial 6% decline.

While we are still early in the year, overall visitor arrivals to Thailand on a country-wide basis have lost ground compared to the same period in 2018, so in reality Phuket’s challenges match those of the entire country.

I seem to remember stories about the airport numbers going into overdrive during Chinese New Year and Songkran!

It wouldn’t be the first time self described “expert” and self promoter Bill Barnett has got it wrong.

I don't understand this obsession with arrival numbers. They would be happier with 10 million visitors who stay 5 days than with 8 million who stay one week, which doesn't make sense.

Why can't they show what really matters, that is how much money is entering Thailand (not, e.g., China) for accommodation, food, shopping, tours?

And also please show the cost to Thai tax-payers and general public.

'slightly volatile' is surely an oxymoron.

Volatile from Latin volatilis "fleeting, transitory" always gives the sense of sudden, radical change.
