The Thai Department of Livestock Development was forced to respond to online rumors about the sales of eggs.

Traders were eggasperated when it appeared that they could go to jail or be fined 10,000 baht for not having the correct paperwork.

DLD director Sorawit Thanito said that the measures were introduced to combat diseases for consumers especially bird flu.

The authorities needed to be able to trace the source of eggs in the event of problems.

In a letter he confirmed that licenses would only apply to large traders and not just people in the street selling a few eggs.

They were fine - for now.

That is until that 'small trader' will be hesitant to throw away old, unsold stock and infect many people with the salmonella virus AND THEN all will be required licences...

Good job that's made clear,as they could be raids by the Army and police,

looking for unlicensed egg sellers.I just hope they have been informed.

It is obvious from the report that small egg traders should not put all their eggs in one basket...they risk getting egg on their faces...so be a good egg and follow the egging rules...

Yeah, Thailand isn't like the US, UK, New Zealand, or the EU.  Yet -- but give it time.  They're thinking about it.  Eventually the large corporations will not abide by small time competition cutting into their profits, and when that happens, they'll have their friends in government make up reasons to put up financial and regulatory roadblocks for entrepreneurs and small business owners.
