1)       The vast, vast majority of those who regularly post on this section of the TV forum are not representative of ex-pats in Thailand.  In fact, it seems that most of the posters are either misfits or newbies (mods excluded).  In other words, most of the ex-pats who have successfully adapted to life in Thailand have no need for this section of the TV forum and do not post.

Immigration changes the rules every few months, you're a fool if you don't look here before your next VISA.

There are mainly two types of long term expats in Thailand.

1) Old guys living with their newly acquired moms (she is my best friend and does everything for me).

2) Old guys looking for sex with younger women (I want a different girl every night).

By definition people not living in their home countries must be misfits, normal people live and die near their birthplace.

Sorry mate, but you forgot about the many of us happily married/living together for quite a few years, who's partner does not do everything for us, and do not still have very regular sex, but are settled and content.

Which of your quoted types are you?

After reading those posts and the many responses, I think that it is important for the readers of this section of the TV forum to consider the following:

1)       The vast, vast majority of those who regularly post on this section of the TV forum are not representative of ex-pats in Thailand.  In fact, it seems that most of the posters are either misfits or newbies (mods excluded).  In other words, most of the ex-pats who have successfully adapted to life in Thailand have no need for this section of the TV forum and do not post.

An unbelievably ignorant statement, based on absolutely no evidence and entirely lacking in credibility. Many of us who post here have been here for decades. I am often surprised at the level of articulation that I see, in some of the posts here. Certainly there are some very dumb replies. But, there are alot of intelligent chaps who regularly use this forum, who have been here for alot longer than you have, and possess alot more common sense than you do.

2)      Thailand does not have and has never had a policy to promote retirement to Thailand by foreigners.  If they did, they would have a visa category that granted a 5 or 10-year stay given proof of financial viability.  But they don’t.

That is true. Not only do they not have a policy to promote retirement here, they openly discourage it. We are seen as the enemy these days, by the ignorant and myopic fools in charge. They are doing the same thing with regard to marrying a Thai woman. Some claim it is getting harder and harder to get a marriage license at the local Amphur. It is certainly ALOT harder to get a marriage visa, than a retirement visa. The hurdles they make you jump over make you want to jump on the next plane, and leave the country forever. I despise immigration here. That is not a bad attitude. That is based on years and years of abuse at their hands. They are horrific, seem to dislike foreigners, and most have bad attitudes. That can also be said for the clerks at the airport. Though on my last entry, I ran into a rather nerdy officer, who was nice, cheerful, and funny. What a refreshing change.

3)      The 800,000 baht amount for the retirement extension is a somewhat arbitrary amount intended to screen out those of lesser means (i.e., a deposit or bond).  Immo has allowed the 65K/month version which is simply 800K/12 to allow people with pensions to qualify without having to show 800K in Thailand for a given time period.  In other words, the 800K/65K/mo. is not about living expenses for an ex-pat year in Thailand.  It is simply a way to limit who can qualify.

No doubt about it. I also think it is the result of lobbying on the part of the Thai banking industry.

4)      Observing the experience at CW is the closest approximation we have as to what national Thai Immigration policy is – even though it may not be followed by local offices, which is a problem of course.

Not sure about that. My only experience with that division was fairly easy. Some of the other offices are nightmarish. Hua Hin and Samui come to mind.

I started off as a 2) and have worked myself half way towards a 1)

On the same scale you're nearly a 1)
