BANGKOK: -- The Culture Ministry and the legal division of the Provincial Administration Department are out to clean up the display of pornography in public places.

"The ministry has set eight strategies against obscene and pornographic media. They include advertising, zoning, pressuring, pricing, taxing and packaging," Vice Culture Minister Weerasak Khowsurat said yesterday.

The first action would be to attack offensive material geared towards adolescents, he said.

"Especially for children and youth cartoon books, we'll force the price up. Now a lewd cartoon book costs Bt35 and up, which kids can afford. If we push the price higher then eventually they'll disappear. The next step will be to ban advertising of sex goods in general publications," Weerasak said.

Newsstands will be required to hide the racy covers of adult magazines from the sight of passers-by. He would seek help from police to enforce this.

On Monday, Weerasak will consult with the Finance Ministry about imposing an excise tax on publications with indecent illustrations.

"Now there's no such tax, but, thinking it's not fair for other publications, I'll bring this up," he said.

A list of 40 offensive websites has been sent to the Information and Communications Technology Ministry to block access.

Pol Colonel Surat Udomrat, commander of the Children and Youth Welfare Division, said that arresting operators of pornographic websites, which allow viewing by underage surfers, was difficult.

The country did not have clear regulations regarding the matter, plus advances in technology made it hard for police to catch up, he said."Many of the obscene online games police cannot yet reach to control. Police also can't arrest the senders of obscene pictures via mobile phones."

hasn't this gambit been re-enacted by every supposedly democratic government on this planet. Some minister and advisors so clued up on technology they need someone to explain how to call people on their mobile phones, decides they know with the help of some software they can stop the transfer of supposedly pornographic material via electronic medium. After putting into place this expensive "solution", they can claim to the moral upstanding people of their electorate that they have shutdown the source that is poisoning the minds of their children. Why the opposition parties do not expose this costly stupidity for what it is I do not know. they could explain that what is required to produce the results they are after is not software, but hardware.....pull the plug...disconnect from everywhere...jam the frequency spectrum used for communications....ban the manufacture of pencils, pens and paintbrushes....or better still blind everyone so they cannot see this vile influence, deafen them so they cannot hear any pleasurable cries and cut off their hands so they cannot touch.......

I imagine that an opposition political party doesn't want to expose this sort of nonsense for what it is because they want to reserve the right to run the same game when they are eventually returned to power.

I reckon pollies need to cleam up their own acts before they even think about trying to 'clean up' other areas. The size and presence of the massage parlours in Bangkok is so massive that it does'nt take much imagination to know what the nations fathers are doing after dark (and during the day too). Hypocrits !
