webfact
Police chief slammed online for not backing up subordinates in influence peddling drama A video on the Red Skull Racing site showed a traffic stop in the south of Thailand where a male driver is sitting next to a female. The junior police officers ask politely to see the man's driving licence but he seems reticent as the female passenger looks for one in a purse. When a more senior officer comes over the driver says that he is the Director General of the Criminal Court Region 8, a high ranking position in the civil service. He clearly expects this to be reason enough not to have to produce a licence. He is asked once again for his licence before the video comes to an end. The two junior officers involved were effectively transferred from their traffic duties after the Thung Yai station chief found out that the man behind the wheel was a friend of his. Netizens slammed the chief for not backing up his underlings as a drama about influence peddling raged. Thung Yai, Nakorn Sri Thammarat, station chief Pol Col Chokedee Rakwattanapong said he took Corporal Theerapong Petchjanthong and Lance Corporal Ekaphon Junsuankaew to meet the director at the court and apologize. The pair were given an explanation of the law and the director general did not want to press any charges, said Pol Col Chokedee. This was reported without a hint of irony by Daily News, reports Thaivisa.. Netizens believed they had nothing to apologize for and it was the director general who should have produced his licence. They said that the junior officers had been perfectly polite. Pol Col Chokedee disagreed. He said that the two men were "new on the job" and "lacked experience" and had used language that was "not delicate enough". He decided to take the newbies off traffic duties and take them under his wing for additional training before letting them back on traffic duties. Thais online screamed "influence peddling" and blasted the chief for backing up a VIP civil servant and not his own men. The "director general" was driving the car. Why shouldn't he produce is DL (doubt he had any)? This Chokedee guy and the "director general" should be moved to 'inactive duties'. colinneil
The driver thinking he is above the law, should be dismissed from his court job. What a fine example he is, just a piece of sh++e.

notasmartassknowitallfarag
Similiar things have happened in the west and social media has worked to back up the traffic police which usually leads to an apology or loss of position for that person in power. Here in Thailand the traffic police need to apologise for having the ‘audacity’ to ask a person higher up in the hierarchy for their license. ( ie; doing their job)

mtls2005
Honestly, what's the point of being born into, or having paid to get higher up, the top of the pyramid if not to avail yourself of privilege? Thai social structure and law are based on this one simple concept, "field prestige". These pesky social media types who think the law should be equally applied are, well, cute. Without this societal structure and acquiescence, and a dominant military of course, the whole thing would fall apart, and the commoners would demanding Benzes for everyone. RJRS1301
oh dear a prime example of one upmanship and entitlement The senior officer should be moved back to traffic job, and sent to do some training on ethics The court person should be removed completely from any role with the courts, total loss of entitlements and sent to the DLT as a clerk

yokat
I despise this behavior and hope the two higher ups get kicked out of their position. If it was set in law that higher ups don't have to produce a driving license (it's not), would anybody claiming to be in a high position be exempted from any kind of control ? webfact
Prayut intervenes in spat between traffic policeman and “judge” Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha today had to intervene to help a traffic police officer in Thailand’s southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat who was abruptly transferred after a spat last week with a driver who claimed to be a senior judge. The driver, who was with his wife in the car, refused to show his driving license when stopped at a police check-point on a road in Thung Yai district by Corporal Aekapon Juisongkaew on the night of May 2. Identifying himself as the director-general of the Region 8 Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases, the driver told the traffic policeman he was a friend of the latter’s supervisor. seajae
the law applies equally to everyone or is supposed to but here in Thailand we see all the BS that goes with these so called high ranking pieces of crap protecting their families/friends or anyone they consider important/rich. The police colonel needs his arse kicked and demoted and the director general does as well, this shows what is wrong here, pathetic people in important jobs and no one with the balls to reprimand as well as demote them

rodknock
as usual nothing no matter how much you talk will ever change the good old boy syndrome. that is what makes this country great is it will not change no matter what someone or the law states. all you need is status, or money. this has been the way the country has been run for 1,000s of years and no matter who is in charge it will never change. how is the red bull doing? corruption, corrupts always has and always will. boonrawdcnx
Why is this even news? Incidents like this are exactly the reason why this country is always somehow around 20 years behind developed nations in which the law is applied to all equally without favor. Any idiot with the IQ of a common house dog seems to demand respect here just because of the position they occupy usually acquired through corrupt practices and connections to other corrupt and useless individuals. hotchilli
This is the perfect example of how Thailand works... two junior officers transferred for apparently doing their job... a senior policeman cowing down to a man "of some status" Thailand is a lost cause!
