Buzz Aldrin salutes the US flag: The moonwalkers were the tip of a very long spear / NASA

The BBC World Service has launched a special podcast series to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

13 Minutes to the Moondetails the final phase of the descent to the lunar surface - and the months and years that led up to those extraordinary moments.

Presenter Kevin Fong recalls meeting the unique cast of characters that contributed to the podcasts, including some of the last surviving Apollo astronauts.

In the making of 13 Minutes to the Moon, we spent the best part of four weeks travelling around the United States looking for the people who, one day in 1969, had somehow got a man safely to the surface of another world.

It truly was an amazing mission ???? one they can longer repeat as they have "lost" the technology (NASA words - not mine)

Can't have been easy flying through the Van Allen belt ????

Great article to reassure people that we did indeed go to the moon - honest ????

Its a  sad world with folk like you and your buddy  in it that's for sure.

This will be a very interesting podcast to listen to.

Without wishing to get into a 'did they - didn't they debate' which is almost impossible when the Moonlandings are discussed, particularly with those more inclined towards more 'tinfoilehattedness' and 'flat-earthery' the common claims and evidence that these landings didn't take place are so easily and readily countered with a little common sense....

For each and every argument against going to the moon there is a balanced and logical counter argument which easily debunks the conspiracists arguments - There are some good 'conspiracy theory' movies out there too which can be quite convincing, but they are so one sided and when countered don't really stand up to the test.

The moon landing happened alright.

Certainly did ???? we have irrefutable proof as President Nixon spoke to them - Live, who can dispute Nixon's credentials? ????
