The sand on Pattaya Beach is all new, and the sea doesn't seem to reach much of it these days. 

This is why you will need insurance.  Thai government cannot insure your safety, so the liability falls to you and your insurance company.  Given how Thailand pollutes the seas, swimming is a bad idea.

Try finding the sewage truck that dumped its load in the canal.  I would like to see the real results of the water test.

It's a miracle! Something that should not have happened to begin with "suddenly" has been resolved. And if you think that "suddenly" a waste water issue has been resolved, then I will refer you to a manual re: common sense. I feel sorry for those who are exposed to this fiasco- either natives or tourists. Oh how great it must be to step on to a beach....to even "think" about swimming there and then to see effluent being discharged into the area where you "thought" was one of the reasons why you came here.

 

And then....the powers that be - albeit without any common sense focuses more on alcohol-free Buddhist holidays. Meanwhile, tourists see the crap beaches and all their supposed glory....get your shit together. PAY people to get the garbage off the beaches....PAY for trash bins (even though there are people who feel that's too much to expect as opposed to simply tossing garbage ). Figure out "why" trash is washing  up on the beaches (duh...look at Indonesia and their similar mindset).

 

There are other cultures who throw their garbage on the streets or wherever. Problem is....Thailand either takes precautions.....either gets rid of people simply throwing their garbage by the way side, OR you will NEVER get away from 3rd world status. Even with your rich developers attempting to attract monied-people.  You're stll a 3rd world country and inasmuch as you may think otherwise? I don't think so.:)

Dilution is the solution to pollution.  The water we shower with likely contains as much bad bacteria as the Gulf of Thailand.  You dont let shower water into your mouth or eyes for a reason, right?  If out on the Bay swimming, just lay out in the sun a few minutes and the solar rays will kill off any bad bacteria....yet you might get skin cancer.  Life is all about trade offs.  ????

I've lived in Jomtien 15 years and have never gone swimming in the waters. I'd prefer a dip in my toilet: I know who put the stuff in there.

I used to wear sandals til I got some nasty skin aliment that produced holes moving across top of foot. Very very difficult for doctor to clear up. Now I wear socks and fisherman's sandals, avoid sand somewhat too...

Thank you for the feed back as I was contemplating buying a condo in Jomtien...Pattaya and Jomtien are both dead, let´s face it!

About three years ago, I made the mistake of swimming at Jom Tien beach.  I was only in the water for a few minutes, thoroughly disgusted with the plastic floating through the water as well as various toilet items.

I ended up with a rash on both arms; my doctor sent me to a specialist, and I was told that it was an infection of the hair follicles.  It cleared up after a few days of antiseptic washes.

What I saw was enough to convince me never to swim at Thai beaches, occasionally I have found some pristine beaches around Thailand in out of the way places where there are no creeks or town run offs. I would suspect that most of the Asian coast lines would have polluted water to some degree.

It is called infrastructure but the Government of the day are more interested in building high speed trains to bring more shitters to the beach instead of building one good hi tech sewerage treatment plant

The solution can be to block the existing waste water and toilet pipes and replace them with composting toilets and waist water tanks - actually not more complicated than that...

The Royal Thai Navy took over that area by gun-point 5 years ago. Their priority seems to have been the harassment of small vendors. Those in charge should be severely dealt with.
