Video-game addiction has been officially recognised as a mental health disorder by the World Health Organisation.

WHO member states have revised their classification of “Diseases and Related Health Problems” to include gaming addiction as a mental health disorder.

The change, which will come into effect on January 1, 2022, identifies gaming addiction as falling into the subcategory of disorders due to substance use or addictive behaviour, such as alcoholism, gambling addiction and drug abuse.

According to the WHO, gaming addiction is characterised by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.

However, not all excessive gaming behaviours are considered gaming addiction, as the world health agency explained that for gaming disorder to be diagnosed, the behaviour pattern must have lasted at least 12 months and significantly impaired the person’s life.

If Who ever decided it applied to mobile phones too, a high percentage of the Thai population would be classified as having the same disorder.

You should perhaps take a trip back to your home country, this is not restricted to the people of Thailand, nor indeed the young.

Cynical, but most probably true.

Landmark decision....and what many of us have known for decades. I used to work in the field and it made me sick to see how many compassionless people see it as a personal failing or a weakness. It is all about brain chemistry.

Worse still, those who claim addiction to be a moral failing.

They're saying it's a "mental health disorder," not quite a disease or physical ailment.  That's sufficiently nebulous.  I'm one of those skeptics who believe that "most" people have control over their own behavior.  I do believe that there's a certain percentage of the population who are more prone to addictions.  Like obesity, they can control it, but it's harder for them than the average person.  But they can control it if they want to.  I just dread people using some medical term as an excuse for their addiction.  It's still about the choices that people make, is it not?

Addiction to love = mental illness
Addiction to gambling or gaming = mental illness
Addiction to faith = mental illness
Addiction to religion = mental illness
Addiction to sexual enjoyment = mental illness
Addiction to physical exercise = mental illness
Addiction to money making = mental illness
Addiction to provide overwhelm information = mental illness

All addiction is mental illness. Either like it or dislike it.
