BANGKOK, 31 May 2019 (NNT) - Deputy Transport Minister Phairin Chuchotithaworn inspected the fire on board a container ship at Laem Chabang port and calcium hypochlorite which is categorized as a hazardous chemical.

The deputy transport minister said KMTC Hongkong container ship at Thai Laem Chabang Terminal Co. is a Hong Kong national laden with 676 containers, only 469 of which were to be unloaded at Laem Chabang port. Only 426 containers were being unloaded at the time when the fire occurred.

He said 13 containers contained calcium hypochlorite which is considered hazardous and thus needed to be obviously declared. But such hazardous chemicals were not declared on the 13 containers combinedly weighing 325 tons. He said the consigner and consignee of the chemical are yet to be interrogated. In the meantime, the captain and crewmembers of the cargo ship are being detained for police questioning.

An initial police interrogation has been conducted with about 100 people who were reportedly injured in the fire. Over 3,500 tons of contaminated water will be pumped out of the ship while the Laem Chabang provincial police continue to inspect and collect evidence. The ship will be moved from Laem Chabang port to Unithai dockyard.

The container fire at Laem Chabang port was such a rare incident and would be the first of its kind since he lived in Mab Taput area for the last 30 years. He said all cargo items to load or unload at the port should be obviously declared since Laem Chabang port is undergoing the Phase 3 development plan which calls for the expansion of the port to be twice as large. He said measures will be taken to keep such incidents from recurring.

The hazardous chemical has affected the respiratory system, eyes and skin of the victims. A total of 229 people were reported to have been exposed to the chemical on the day of the incident and are currently hospitalized, plus over 1,400 others who claimed to have been affected by it.

No wonder he stayed away so long.  Now it's safe he'll be putting in his Compo Claim.
