Future Forward party claims being offered up to 120m baht for each vote for PM

One day ahead of the vote in parliament to elect a prime minister, the Future Forward party is claiming today that some of its MPs have been offered between 30 million and 120 million baht for each vote cast for current Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, the Palang Pracharat party’s prime ministerial candidate.

The Pheu Thai-led coalition has decided to nominate Future Forward party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit as their candidate for the post.

Mr. Anawil Rattanasathaporn, an MP representing Pathum Thani province, told a news conference at the party’s head office today that he was twice approached by someone, whom he declined to identify, who initially offered him 25 million baht and, later, offered up to 60 million baht in exchange for his vote, but he rejected them all.

These are interesting claims and, if there is such a thing as a group of Thai politicians who put loyalty to their party/electorate before money, there is hope for the country yet.  On the other hand, if there have been so many such offers, why is no proof offered?

Yeah, they might have to reduce the number of submarines on order - spending all that taxpayer's money on trying to cling on to power.

C'mon who on earth would  make an offer  like that except  verbally and probably not by phone  etc a  "quiet  word"

To toss around coin like this, the plans to rape the trough (and the Thai people) are astronomically huge. This would seem to mean clawing back (or transferring) heavy funds already sitting in offshore bank accounts. Then the raping would continue on an even grander scale to once again fill, and even overflow, those offshore accounts. Hope this latest shenanigan hits social media and gets the exposure it deserves. That seems to be the only method that works effectively.

(100 million baht = 3 million US dollars) Somebody either wants to hold onto their position pretty badly or they need more time to cover up their gross corruption of the previous term.

Where this money come from?

Having unusual wealth is what they call it,  A crime for those on the wrong side of the political divide.

This money was stolen from the people, stashed in an offshore bank account, now "a little bit" clawed back to buy allegiance, then if successful, more, much more, will be stolen and deposited into the offshore accounts to replace the temporary dip. It's a vicious circle.

False news. where is the proof??

In the Bangkok Post it was claimed that the offers were made by corporates, not by the government, so it shows how profitable the Junta is for big business (if the claims are true, that is)

False news - there are not many Thais would turn down a bribe of one million baht; there are NO politicians who would turn down a thirty million bribe.

And if you did accept the money you would not be showing anyone!!!!

I take your point entirely.

Perhaps there are some who might be forward looking - in the respect that when the junta falls, any investigations into those who supported them would be pretty wide-ranging and the recriminations serious.

Half of the civilian politicians would become instant exiles.

After being told so many times that the senate was there to ensure Prayuth's election as PM, I have to wonder what made these few votes so valuable.

I’m guessing the democrats who sold out drove a really hard bargain.

I don't think that the point, if this did occur, would-be to influence the selection of the Prime Minister, that is, and always has been, a "done deal".

Being able to show, however, that the pro democracy grouping is not united in opposition to Prayut would be extremely valuable politically. The establishment, political and corporate are worried about them, if the sums quoted are correct, very worried!

I believe that there have been offers of this kind, the policy is march and democracy no longer exists, I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE REFUSED!

Or it could be a totally fabricated smear to enhance their own political profile. Without laying out large sums.

Going rate for a schmuck's vote in the village I used to live in was 500 Baht.

Life is good the closer to the trough you get.  These Army boys are dug in deep, you'd need an armored tank to get them out.  Ironic, innit.

I can understand the people who say - no Thai politician would turn down 30 - 120 million baht. That level of cynicism is very understandable given the blatant corruption in politics. But I do believe in hope and the ability of people to change and I do think FFP and its voters have demonstrated that they want to change Thai politics and have hope, (which is frightening to the establishment).

Remember the election predictions with FFP predicted to get a handful of seats at most. Getting 80 seats has scared the hell out of the establishment - the genie is out of the lamp - and they will do anything to get the FFP politicians into their pockets. Voting for PM is not a secret ballot remember -MPs need to do so publically -  so having a FFP politician stand up in parliament and publically back Prayut for PM would be a coup for the establishment (no pun intended). As it would be political suicide.

So the intent and motive to offer them money and in one swoop wipe them off the political playing field is very probably true.

More corrupt than any other so called dictatorship in Asia

Future Forward had better watch their step: they will be accused of 'spreading false news' and violating some concocted 'computer crimes act'. ANYTHING - true, false or half-true, half-false - will be used against Future Forward, now and well into the future.

They are the new bogeyman - the new 'Thaksin' (in the eyes of the Establishment) - only much, much more dangerous, ethical and radical.
