Pheu Thai: EC must take responsibility for ‘improper  conduct, discrimination against anti-junta politicians’

The Pheu Thai Party on Monday called for the Election Commission to accept responsibility for what it claimed was improper conduct and discrimination against anti-junta politicians.

 

Party spokesperson Ladawan Wongsriwong raised six issues about which it wanted to grill the commission, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the body’s current, post-2014-coup incarnation.

 

She asked the EC to reveal the vote tallies of all polling stations in the March 24 general election, as many parties have submitted letters requesting the announcement of election scores since March 27, a few days after the poll.

 

Pheu Thai also accused the EC of not using the correct method to calculate party-list MPs for political parties, resulting in the pro-junta camp getting seats they were not supposed to have, she said, insisting that the method chosen by the electoral body was unconstitutional.

 

Ladawan also alleged that the EC had acted in a discriminatory manner by quickly submitting the controversial case against Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Jaungroongruangkit over his shareholding in a media business.

 

While Thanathorn’s case had been speeded up, those concerning another 40 MPs had moved at a slow pace, she said.

 

Cases against her own party over the alleged violation of election law had also moved quickly, compared to other cases, she added.

 

Would the election commissioners take responsibility, as they have been flooded by complaints about their action and inaction, the Pheu Thai spokesperson asked. 

 

More than 800,000 have signed an online petition asking for investigation into the role of the EC and seeking the unseating of its independent committee members, she pointed out.

 

“The general election garnered not only negative opinions from Thai society, but also from foreign countries. Many foreign media reported that General Prayut Chan-o-cha won the vote in Parliament to sit in the top government post because of the unfair rules putting other competitor parties at a disadvantage. Thai society has waited for an explanation from the EC,” Ladawan said.

The Washington Post had some choice words in their editorial. "Mr. Prayut's confirmation as prime minister was less an exercise in democracy than a crude mockery of it. It followed a grossly unfair election campaign from which some opponents of the regime were banned and others were hounded with criminal charges..........orgy of manipulation". Perfectly summed up the entire rigged election for the undeserving prime minister.

unfortunately (the majority of) Thais don't read foreign news papers and Thai government doesn't give a dam about what outsiders think about their way of governance,,, we are back at square one

well EC true task was to spot those requiring attitude adjustment

But still it's comforting to know that in the eyes of the outside world, the stolen election has been recognized for what it really is. At least to me it is.

Thai people are very well informed on how this election was rigged. They don't need to learn it from foreign media. And the yellow/green don't care much about what they think either.

The Washington Post op-ed direct their call for the Trump administration and Congress to deter what the Thai military has done and that include aids and GSP privileges. Prayut may not give a dam but if the economy is hurt because of US actions, it will increase the resentment of the people. You also underestimate the power of the social media.

It's much like marketing a product. Spread the gospel far and wide. In this case, it's negative gospel about the rigged election that is being spread. And as Eric Loh has noted, "social media" will weigh in heavy.

I  very muchdoubt whether there was much skulduggery in the tallying of votes. The sources of the fixed election are elsewhere.

Twitter user @cgureeporn pointed out that with 83 percent of ballots counted, results said more than 22 million ballots had been accounted for five parties, but the number of voter turnout was at a little over 20 million.

 

“There are obviously some irregularities with the numbers because they don’t add up. This is making people skeptical of the election results,” said Future Forward spokeswoman Pannika Wanich.

 

"He added that the number of ballot papers were higher than those casting the votes, adding that in many constituencies, the PPRP's vote "just jumped all of a sudden... from third place to first place, in some constituencies, the PPRP switched from losing to winning.."

 

Inconsistent ballot counting, late delivery of overseas ballots and the Election Commission’s decision to postpone the announcement of results as pro-junta Phalang Pracharath Party was in the lead, led netizens to unleash their fury over the handling of the polls already in doubt.

 

With 94 per cent of overall votes counted, the Election Commission reported that Palang Pracharat was leading with 7.69 million votes. At 100% of the count Palang Pracharat had 8.41 million votes. Whilst winning 24.4% of the total vote, Palang Pracharat won 33% of the last 6% of ballots counted.

 

It all of course begs the simple question - why hide the data?

Why do you think the figures for each constituency have not been released?

What possible reason is there other than concealing evidence?

Why argue with the EC?

Petition the Constitutional Court for a ruling.

Previously, the Court rejected ruling on the issue by essentially saying that the EC has not yet determined the final seat count using its proposed admittedly possible unconstitutional method.

• "Since the facts showed that the petitioner [EC] had yet to use its authority (to calculate) as stated by law, a problem related to its duty and authority has yet to occur."

Now that the EC has announced MP seat distributions resulting from its "unique" calculations, it's overdue for a petition by either the EC or PTP for a Court ruling ASAP!
