Prayut gets royal endorsement as prime minister

I'll stock up with popcorn. Most people here can't accept the reality that Prayuth will be in charge until he retires or kicks the bucket, because he controls the levers of power, guns and all, as has been manifestly demonstrated over the past years.

Such is the quirky Asian way of government, but we still choose to live here and life's not so bad.

“There are two steps the PM must take before performing his duties. The first is to take an oath of office, and then to declare the government’s policy direction,” the deputy PM said.

All formalities and eyewash. His bigger issue will be getting all of his detractors to line up or to make them disappear. He'll be able to do exactly what he wants regardless, for a while, but eventually forces will gather to dispose of him if he doesn't get them into position with pockets properly stuffed.

But does he?

The sun may not shine on the Eastern Tigers for much longer and then someone else will have the guns.

Probably won't be an improvement either.

Sad. Had high hopes that when he banged his fist on the table in 2014 with 'guards, arrest everyone!', a swift cracking of heads, getting things in order, then outta there would be it. Five years on and unfortunately looks like he and his brethren have had the taste of life 'up top' and, whether or not snouts adorn troughs, power has gone to head. Par for the course for much of Asian, it seems, and in this respect they are still generations behind the West.
