'Bangkok girls warped by porn'

BANGKOK: -- Many bangkok girls think its "cool" to e-mail nud_e pictures of themselves, along with photos in which they are having sex, to other people, according to the Cultural Watch Centre.

"Some female students upload pictures of themselves having sex and other nud_e pictures so other people can see them, because they think it's cool," said the centre's chief Ladda Thangsupachai.

Young people in big cities are getting a distorted notion of sexuality due to the easy access to pornographic materials via the Internet and mobile phones, Ladda said.

Thai values, in which women are expected to preserve their virginity and display sexual correctness, are being replaced by an obscene and vigorous sexual expression, she said.

"They [bangkok girls] set the example of a free-sex society that will lead to premarital pregnancies, rape and crime," Ladda said.

"We found that young people of other regions [outside Bangkok] did not have such a serious problem because of their limited access to media due to poverty or distant locations," she added.

The Cultural Watch Centre, an agency of the Culture Ministry, is conducting seminars across the country as part of its anti-pornography campaign. The final seminar would be on June 16 at the Cultural Centre at which representatives will exchange ideas and make pornography a national issue, Ladda said.

A solution would be to proposed to Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra so that a budget could be allocated to crackdown on obscenity. The Ministry would propose that Cultural Watch Centres be set up at all schools, Ladda said.

The truth, I suppose, is that this country is extremely divided. The circles where Khun Ladda hang out are totally out of touch with the reality of other stratas of Bangkok society.

While I understand that selling pornography or owning it with the intent to sell are criminal offenses (correct me if I´m wrong) in Thailand, still anyone walking down Sukhumwit in broad daylight can see porn DVDs on open display. Some policemen are probably able to afford private lessons for their kids... and while there is nothing wrong with sex or watching people having sex, porn films take sexual fantasies to the extreme, and can create a warped view of sexuality.

It is not possible to entirely ban pornography unless you shut down the Internet, but kids need to be provided with the mental tools to understand that porn is an enactment of fantasies, mainly male fantasies, and just like most Hollywood movies, produced with the sole purpose of generating money.

Flame on.

The non-analysis and non-reflection still prevailing among most Thais, except for an educated and realtively small elite, are becoming more and more dangerous when things are changing as quickly as they do. I understand the fears of the Thai leadership in a sense, but it is time to start providing true and correct information and stop being prude and using prohibition as the only tool of dealing with perceived threats or cultural changes. If teenagers are taught to see beyond the shallowness of porn, they can develop a sexual and sensual identity of their own which is truly liberated, secure, disease-free and cool, and where they know what they want, and are not afraid to say so. At least thats the way I'd like it to develop.

So, how does the government know all this - are they monitoring all telephone calls? Sorry, I forgot - AIS does the monitoring.

Many years ago (the eighties) British Telecom upgraded the Libyan system. All international telephone calls were monitored, all telexes showed up on TV screens in the control centres. Fax machines were not allowed.

1) implement more curfews.

I don't remember Thailand having low statistics on premarital pregnancies, rape and crime before the invention of cellphones or the internet, nor have I heard of anybody being raped or getting pregnant through the telephone.
