This baby dugong didn’t make it

By The Nation

A baby dugong was found dead on the shore of an island off the Trang coast on Thursday, possibly separated from its mother in high seas and then stranded at low tide.

The Marine and Coastal Resources Department reported on Facebook on Friday that the animal found on Koh Meng in Si Kao district was 110 centimetres long, 68cm wide and 20 kilograms in weight.

The carcass had begun to decompose, indicating it had been ashore for three or four days, coinciding with heavy rains and high waves at sea.

The waters off the location where the body was found are abundant with sea grasses and are protected as a dugong habitat.

The department said the baby was about the same age as Mariam, a dugong rescued off Krabi on April 26 and then relocated to Koh Libong in Trang.

The department said about 185 dugongs currently live along the Trang coast.
