snoop1130
Plan to issue 100 million lottery tickets per draw criticised by Democrat MP A senior Democrat MP has voiced strong objection to the Government Lottery Office’s plan to increase the number of lottery tickets issued every two weeks by 10 million to 100 million while it is waiting for government approval of its online 2 and 3 digit lottery project. Mr. Kiat Sittheeamorn, a party-list MP, said in his Facebook post on Thursday that he was very worried about the GLO’s plan, pointing out that there are only two groups of people who will benefit from this move; the GLO and the lottery wholesalers. He explained that an average of 20 million people buy lottery tickets every two weeks, but only 20,000 of them win lottery prizes from 2,000 baht for a two-digit win up to a six million baht first prize. Increasing the number of lottery tickets for each draw and increasing the jackpot to ฿100,000,000 will encourage more people to gamble, despite the fact that 99.9% of them will lose every time, said Mr. Kiat. “What is the explanation from the GLO? For me, this amounts to intoxication of the people (to gambling) and adding a financial burden to about 20 million people every month. The people who actually benefit from every lottery draw are the middlemen and the GLO,” said the Democrat MP. Mr. Kiat claimed that the increasing the number of tickets available has never and will never solve the problem of over-pricing. His proposal for the registration of all lottery sellers was never implemented “probably because they are afraid of the influence of the big shots and some vested interest s.” “Think about a direct sales business, which has a network of more than one million lottery vendors. Why can’t they control over-pricing? Why can’t the GLO do it? It is shameful,” said Mr. Kiat in his post. Citing experience the US and Australia, the Democrat PM also expressed doubt that the 2 digit and 3 digit online lottery system would help eliminate underground gambling on the official draw results. He also cited the conviction, by the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Offices, of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra for issuing 2 digit and 3 digit lottery tickets, which the court described as form of addictive intoxicant, with the government being the supplier. Surely the government wouldn't be running a gambling business? This MP has said it's gambling. After all it is illegal, as the PM said the other day regarding the kids claw-grabbing machines - that's gambling he said and will have to go. <end of cynical mode>
Popular Post dcnx
Just stay away from the stuffed animal grab machines and everything will be fine. Those things are at the root of Thailand’s eroding culture.

bangkokfrog
One reason the government is unlikely to scrap the lottery is that (according to the great wizard of Wiki) at least 28% of revenues (over 4bn baht) is distributed to supposed "charities, community projects and scholarships". Although I am sure that most of these will stand up to scrutiny (eg Thai Red Cross), allocation is actually discretionary and senior MPs have a say in how money is spent in their electorates or otherwise. A nice little slush fund!

leeneeds
I can remember in Australia, having lottery tickets for 16,000 dollars then they went to a Saturday live draw, the government saw how much money they made from this so increased the lottery to a mid week draw, now they have a draw mon, tues, wed, thur and sat, plus other set for life draws etc, The government will never abandon this cash cow, plus the casino availability and the horses, trots and sports. Aussies love a gamble just like our cousins the Thais, charities and hospitals , orphanages and public projects benefit. I think the big difference here, will be where the money is spent and WHO has control of the cookie jar.

jaltsc
"He explained that an average of 20 million people buy lottery tickets every two weeks, but only 20,000 of them win..." It's called "GAMBLING", and the house always wins in the end. If it isn't the lottery, they will bet on something else. Just about everyone in this part of the world is addicted due to the common belief that good luck will eventually fall their way. The one saving grace the lottery has for the gamblers is that they pay up front with money they have in hand. Yes, that money could be used to support a family if not wasted on the lottery, but at least they won't get their legs broken if they can't come up with the money to pay off their losses to professional gambling thugs (vs. governmental thugs). mikebell
A top prize of 6 million for 100 baht! In the UK, for the same money, it's around 16 million two or three times a week for a fixed price ticket where you decide your numbers AND everything is audited with a public view of where the money goes.

kirbi53
Even though he is a DEM it makes a lot of sense considering the very strict laws regarding gambling here. BAN it just like darts, bridge, crab claw machines and connect 4 (5555 remembering that one) While they are at it BAN ALL of the on line gambling/sports betting sites I see regularly on my internet. They are super annoying especially Happy Luke's.

So they will go get the missing money in the pocket of those who have the least

First if all, it's 80 baht per ticket unless you buy multiple tickets with the same number. What's the chance for the UK lottery to win the top prize? In Thailand it's 1:1 million. I think in the UK your chance is MUCH less to win the top prize.
