Do you think civilians are unaware of the military?  Do you think the traditional festivities lacked pride and patriotism?  Regarding "MAGA values form the past", for most of US history citizens were very suspicious of the military and kept it as small and out of sight as possible.

 

Trump is turning a popular, traditional, non-partisan Fourth of July celebration into an "I am the greatest" campaign rally.  Making it even more blatant and illegal, he is using taxpayer money and passing out VIP tickets to Republican donors.  That is what people object to.  Got it?

And you seem to have a blind spot of your own. It's not great that it's turning into a military celebration. The founding fathers had no use for either a standing army or celebrations of military prowess. But the real problem is that Presidents have traditionally avoided appearing at the celebration in order not to appear to be making it a partisan affair. And given that he's showing favoritism to his own political party and donors to his campaign, he's already dirtied it up a bit. Maybe even violated the Hatch Act. Not the he cares about such things. Nor apparently do many if not most Trump supporters.
