BANGKOK (NNT) - The Election Commission (EC) is posting name lists of electors who did not cast their votes in the 24 March general election. The EC director said the announcement is not aimed at condemning those who failed to vote but it is required by the law, dismissing speculation that a gubernatorial election will be held soon.

The Election Director for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Witchuda Mekhanuwong, said that announcing the names of electors who fail to vote complies with Section 34 of the organic law of the constitution on Members of the Parliament election.

The law requires that a name list of electors who fail to vote or do not provide a valid and sufficient reason for such failure, must be announced for electors to check their status ahead of a regional election. Citizen IDs of people who fail to vote will not be disclosed to protect their personal information.

The director confirmed that the EC does not mean to condemn them and the announcement does not signify a gubernatorial poll. She said it depends on the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and the new administration to decide when to organize an election.

A gubernatorial election is expected to take place this November or December.

Lak Si District Office, one of the Bangkok district offices which have not posted a name list, reported that it may instead publicly inform electors that they can check their status to vote with the district staff. No announcement has been posted yet at the Lak Si district office.

According to the election law, non-voters are banned for two years to file a petition to object a MP election, apply to a regional politician or an MP, apply a to be a village headman, serve as a political official, and work as an executive of provincial administrative organizations.

i doubt most Thais dont care a flying f***, as we all knew the outcome before the election, it was all show

Name and shame.  Wonder if anyone will take a run at a libel suit?
