US supports Thailand’s role as regional leader, says Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

 

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who will be visiting Thailand for Asean meetings later this month, says Washington hopes for transparency and good governance in the newly formed Cabinet under Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

 

“We support transparency and good governance around the world and will continue to work with the Thai people and the Royal Thai government to this end, Pompeo said on Tuesday.

 

The US looked forward to deepening the alliance between the two nations and building on more than two centuries of friendship, he said.

 

While prioritizing a desire to retain its alliance with Thailand, Donald Trump’s administration has softened the US’s stance on the need for democracy and human rights in the Kingdom. Prayut staged a coup to topple an elected civilian government in 2014 and created laws and mechanisms to perpetuate his power ever since.

 

His new Cabinet, which contains many former ministers, was finally sworn in on Tuesday following the general election held nearly four months ago.

 

The US-Thailand alliance remains strong, said Pompeo, and the US continued to support Thailand’s role as a regional leader, including its chairmanship of Asean this year.

 

Pompeo is scheduled to attend the meeting of senior Asean officials in Bangkok from July 29 to August 3, when it will highlight his country’s strategy for the Asean and Indo-Pacific regions amid the rise of China.

 

“Our alliance will grow even stronger as we work together to advance goals common to both countries, such as security, peace, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and throughout the world,” said the Secretary of State.

 

America’s top diplomat will also have a meeting with countries in the Mekong Basin - Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand - under the framework of the Lower Mekong Initiative.

 

His goal will be to maintain American visibility amid the negative environmental impacts of China’s vast infrastructure development projects in the Mekong, notably hydro-power dams and navigation improvement.

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement in response to the swearing-in of Thailand’s new government on Tuesday. 

 

The statement reads as follows:

 

“The United States looks forward to working with the newly formed Royal Thai government to deepen the alliance and partnership between our two nations, building upon over two centuries of friendship between our people. We support transparency and good governance around the world and will continue to work with the Thai people and the Royal Thai government to this end.

 

The US-Thailand alliance remains strong, and we continue to support Thailand’s role as a regional leader, including its chairmanship of Asean this year. Our alliance will grow even stronger as we work together to advance goals common to both countries, such as security, peace, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and throughout the world.

no they don't - they have you on a close watch to see how Thailand's current administration can evolve - maybe further down the line depending on a lot of issues especially human rights - we will see how it goes

 

I am not holding my breath - my confidence in Thai democracy right now is at the lowest it has ever been these last 15 years

Actually building a footpath can be quite a complex and involved operation especially in a built up area,firstly you have to find any services that might be lurking beneath the surface like gas mains electrical and comms cables and sewers Gets pretty shitty if you hit one.Then you have to get survey in to tell you where to dig and how deep to dig.You have to know where property boundaries are because if you put it in the wrong place you are liable.Then you have to usually build the road next to the footpath and install all the services like drainage and the rest of the sh!t that goes with it and everything has to be within the tolerances set by the engineers.So once you have got survey back to check and record that everything is in the right place you can finish your footpath and when you have finish you again get survey in to check and record everything so that you can get paid for all the work you have done!So yes build a footpath is pretty easy once you know how!So do you want me to explain how to build an iron ore mine and railways and port services?

More complicated and intricate than that. China still needs every country to hold hands with them as they need to suck everyone's raw material and food to feed the 1.4 billion people they have. Their country will starve if cannot.

 

Unfortunately they are very pushy in taking what they want under another you don't understand us guise (but untrue), per-say like the South China Sea, or Tibet, or Hong Kong, and Taiwan which they will invade as they say it is their sovereignty of right. They act as they are always being persecuted, picked on and misunderstood, but far from it as they are a real bully.

 

So technology whether it be nuclear or biological could wipe them out quick ( and devastate the world), but the diplomatic way under peace is by aligning allies to keep the middle line and not keep moving it. Can the USA with allies like India, EU, Australia, Indonesia, Canada, Vietnam, etc, and more be unified enough to make a smart difference? Yes. So it is not only 327 million people of the USA, but as always a joined effort. Philippines is going to fall to them with this Duterte loose canon at their helm. so there maybe a quick war skirmish with them, I hope not, but if there is then so be it as they are over always over stepping their boundaries now where the world is becoming smaller having more population with less raw material, food and water.
