PHUKET:-- Phuket Vice Governor Thanyawat Chanpinit today warned two temples in Phuket to be careful to not engage or support any activities that may be construed as scams targetting tourists.

V/Gov Thanyawat also ordered relevant officials to “take care of customers and tourists, and to prevent any kind of scamming”.

“Officials have to strictly do things under the law and if they find illegal activities, they can proceed immediately,” he said.

(from the Phuket News report)

"At last report, Somkiet Kaewsakul, who heads Puttatham Co Ltd, which literally translates as “Buddhism Virtue Co Ltd”, during the inspection in Nov 2017 told the press, “Chinese tourists have visited the temple for more than 10 years. As Chinese and Thai are culturally different, sometimes this can cause damage to the image of Buddhism. So we made the building to look similar to a temple to help the tourists understand how to behave appropriately while they are here.

“The items and artefacts are all real. We did not force anyone to buy them. The prices range from around B1,000 to more then B10,000,” he said"

Glad to see Somkiet Kaewsakul appears practising his spin doctor impression, doing a good job waffling as to why they built a lookalike temple to cheat tourists in order to sell them 'artefacts'.

Phuket must be really scared about the drop in tourists if it's resorting to dragging these details up.

Always been a commercial aspect to religion .. I mean what a loyal customer base you have .. From cradle to grave with the everlasting threat of hell and damnation if you err from the scriptures and don't buy the souvenirs or place on the plate as its passed along the pews .. they've even got it sown up when it comes to checking out from this mortal coil as you have to pass through the church/temple on the way to the pyre or boneyard .. And trying to do you're despatch diy is probably not likely to guarantee entrance to the afterlife club .. Not to mention the amount of land and buildings owned by the various religious institutions .. The tat and quant customs you must pay for is maybe summed up by Holy Water which ranges from less than a tenner for you're casual god bother grade upto near 40 squid for the finest holy H2O suitable only for hardcore puritan upholders of the faith ..

At least with the temples you get a takeaway trinket for your donation baht.

Unlike the west.

Put money in a plate for nothing, then years later feel very sick about the sort of "activities" you might have been funding.
