Coming here with a military mindset of order, a wife, and relationship obligations back in the US were factors which were always going to make adaptation to living here very difficult. Ten years here now, and counting. Currently I'm in Melbourne freezing my nuts off, waiting to get back to a warm climate, and my Thai GF. Not to mention food which doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Not gonna be easy. But also sad to leave with such negative feelings about Thailand when really the short time here was just not enough to make the adjustment in mindset etc - even if he wanted too. But on a positive note at least he wont be mentally blaming the family for having to leave somewhere where he felt really happy. On the contrary. As I mentioned then, my wife had to return to the states 5 weeks ago due to her father’s ill health. Now, her 87 year old mother was just diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, so I am returning home to help Laura with them. No more visa craziness. It’s not what I could of ever imagined when we arrived, but the damn Immigration cloud has been lifted. Enjoy your flight, don't freeze too much and please don't expect your own folks to be like Thai people, at least the ones I know and like as my friends, or relatives. One last question. I think many arrive here later in life with a certain expectation of how it was when they visited years ago and like all things, they change. We also all know that not all changes are for the better. I am from the US and I have to say that living and working here is significantly better then the US I left behind. I think in the end though, it takes time getting life dialed in and adapting to moving away from ones home country ( 1 year is not long enough, that is basically a long holiday). The English, Australians, Germans, and French I have had conversations with are the ones always putting down thailand's people and culture and terrible traffic and infrastructure in my experience. Though these conversations are in bars and alcohol is involved, so would not consider my opinion a scientific study ???? You need somebody who gives you orders, because you don't learn how to be independent in the States.
