The business sentiment of Japanese investors in Thailand for the next six months has increased following the establishment of the government, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said today. He was citing the business sentiment survey of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok.

Somkid met with the chamber president, Shinji Nakano, today (August 5) at Government House.

He said that the chamber survey found that the sentiment of Japanese businesses in Thailand for the first six months had dropped, due to their concerns over the US-China trade war, the stronger baht value, and the slow establishment of the new Thai government.

The sentiment picked up after the complete installation of the new government, he said.

Somkid also assured the chamber that the new government would continue the policies and agreements made between Japan and the previous Thai government.

The chamber also asked Somkid to consider carefully the plan to raise the daily minimum wage. Somkid replied that the issue would be carefully discussed by representatives of the government, private sector and labour sector.

Korbsak Pootrakool, the deputy secretary general to the Prime Minister on political affairs, said that Somkid also told the chamber that new economic stimulus packages would soon be launched to boost the domestic consumption.

The chamber told Somkid that several Japanese companies were considering relocating their production bases to Thailand due to concerns over impacts of escalating trade wars.

The chamber also invited Somkid to stage a roadshow in Japan to promote investment opportunities in Thailand. The roadshow is expected to take place in October.

Korbsak added that Somkid also ordered the Thai Board of Investment to set up a team to woo those investors worried about the trade war, to relocate their business or set up headquarters in Thailand.

Why is it,whenever there is a meeting with some other organisations from outside Thailand,we never get direct quotes from the organisations concerned. It is always a Thai Government spokesman(woman) who makes a statement along the lines of "They said this" They are happy with this" .

Or is it just the Thai spokesperson saying what they think their boss wants to hear.

I have posed the question, but I think I know the answer,This is Thailand after all.

I've also noticed this.

Part of the problem is that the Thai media has no outlet with a global voice.

Thai media serves only the Thai state and is therefore not truth-seeking.

Somkid can be likened to Rip Van Winkle waking from his 100 year slumber. Thailand under the junta has been sound asleep in the Land of Nod for past few years while Vietnam has stolen the march. Setting up a team to woo investors to Thailand is about 2 years too late. Thailand has been left choking in Vietnam's trade dust.

A recent report headed "Vietnam emerges a key winner from the US-China trade war". A few of the interesting points are:

1. The best restaurants are peppered with tables of Japanese businessmen.

2. Japan was the largest investor in Vietnam in 2018 with US$8.59 billion, 24.2 per cent of the total investment capital.

3. Vietnam is shaping as arguably the key beneficiary of the trade war.

4. Vietnam has a history of successfully playing China off against Russia, and the US is now firmly in that mix.

5. Vietnam is more than just a low-cost garment maker and is attracting a formidable investor list among the world’s top technology brands to build parts and assemble goods.

Saw an article today, Bloomberg I think, that said that Vietnam, who'd done well at the expense of China and trade wars is no beginning to fall foul of Trump. Interesting to see what develops.

Anyway, nice to see you don't mind non democratic one party communist dictatorships.
