Farang - Wikipedia

"Farang (Thai: ฝรั่ง,  [faràŋ], colloquially  [falàŋ]) is a generic Thai word for person of white race no matter where they may come from. The Royal Institute Dictionary 1999, the official dictionary of Thai words, defines the word as "a person of white race".[1]"

Muay Patamaporn's "Krapao Ruam Mit Khai Dao" (fried basil over rice with the works, including fried egg) cost a whopping 120 baht.

Have to pay me 120 baht to eat that "Krap-ao"

Can you explain please what a "Falang" is.

Similar to 'chink' for Asians: it's the lazy uneducated term used by certain Asian countries and small minded expats to describe a Caucasian or Caucasian looking person.

Your welcome.

farang originally referred to french,

i can just imagine the french explaining they were

coming from francee' with a hefty alien accent,

which thais pronounced as the easier on the tongue farang

It relates to the Frankish Empire. Originally a Persian word, from which France later derived it's name.

I’m not exactly “cosmopolitan” when I come to Thailand, and I go to the markets in Ubon with [SoonToBe] Mrs and [STB] step daughters a fair amount. We have never ever had a bad experience in any of them, and very often I’m treated to a really special smile from the stall holders.

On one memorable occasion the Mrs was ordering some spicy noodley stuff that they put into plastic bags for us to take home. I was round the corner looking at another stall, and when I came up to her, the stall-lady asked “You Amerigan?”. When I said “Mai American, pom Angrit” (my Thai is a tiddly bit limited ????), the smile she gave me nearly split her face in half, and she put an extra ladle of stuff into the bags.

I am always made to feel good in Ubon ????
