brokenbone
is there any material that lend itself to be stuck underneath the nail to force it to grow straight, without constantly being squeezed out ? what can i do to keep whatever i shove in there to stay there ? Jingthing
I solved this problem with both of my big toes years ago. I think I used pieces of cotton balls rolled up but I'm not sure about that. This article mentions waxed dental floss. You need to change the material often anyway. This process took me months to be sure it was really going to work. Make sure you cut all toenails with a STRAIGHT edged cutter. Soaking your feet in warm water with Epsom salt is helpful but good luck finding Epsom salt in Thailand. Pharmacies won't have it but some Chinese traditional medicine shops will. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/ingrown-toenails/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20355908 Edited August 9, 2019 by Jingthing

Oh no. You need to be patient or you're going to be a patient. I recall I just pushed them in with a tool on my clippers. Depending on your case, it might not work. Another thing I do after I fixed this is never cut the nails very short. I think the general "surgical" treatment" here is to remove the entire nail. I don't know if they treat that bare skin to prevent new nails from growing back or not. Foot specialists almost don't exist here. I think the self treatment method is worth a try but I'm biased because it worked for me. BTW, I've mentioned this before and I will again. The REASON I developed that awful problem in the first place is because I was getting pedicures in Thailand. Maybe I was unlucky but they seem to favor cosmetics over health and the way they were cut on the side on the big toes definitely caused the problem. I don't know how to use floss for this. I know I didn't use floss. Maybe someone else can advise. Also you need to keep things clean, change whatever thing you're using often, and watch for infection. Edited August 9, 2019 by Jingthing

Jingthing
Well my toenails aren't pretty because I keep them longer than most people so I have noticed people, especially Thais, are always staring down at my toes when I'm riding the baht buses. Maybe some are looking for a pedicure gig. In any case, it makes me feel like smacking them. I don't even know their names and they're inspecting a gross personal body part. Buy me a drink first! Stare into your PHONE like a normal person! Edited August 9, 2019 by Jingthing 1

As I said I'm not even sure I used cotton. It might have been rolled up index cards. The idea is to find something sturdy that does the job. You're going to need to change whatever it is often and I really do recommend the foot soaking too. I guess it took at least two months before I was pretty confident that the method was really working. You're basically retraining the nails to grow differently. I don't remember when I stopped putting in the material either. I don't think it was that much longer than realizing it was working. Jingthing
Sheryl can confirm this but I assume if do go to a Thai doctor they won't offer anything except nail removal. So I think these are your two options. Removal or self treatment. I don't know what you have to lose by self treatment. If it doesn't work, then get them removed. Of course watch for infections as the nails growing up can open in the skin, so that's a risk. Edited August 9, 2019 by Jingthing

brokenbone
i should mention this: i need to use a plyer and squeeze the nail straight before i shove in the fluss. unfortunately the nail is too short on one side each of both toes so i'm going to have to wait to treat them until the nail there is long enough Edited August 9, 2019 by brokenbone

In any case I would start the training even when short. That's the idea to get things growing out better. Outbackoz
Normally in Oz the podiatrist will inject the toe to kill the edge of the nail so it grows straight on the nail plate. I was browsing through Lazada the other day and there were numerous solutions offered for sale. But not sure how successful they would be. https://www.lazada.co.th/catalog/?q=Ingrown+toenail&_keyori=ss&from=input&spm=a2o4m.product-not-exist-m.search.go.34db268docxvqk

Sent from my Lenovo A7020a48 using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app it makes sense to me, given the forces at play. imagine you would split the nail in half all the way down to the root, now there are no force that would want to bend the nail acting
