(Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General William Barr on Monday criticised "serious irregularities" at the federal prison where Jeffrey Epstein died in an apparent suicide, adding that the sex-trafficking investigation involving the disgraced financier would continue.

Epstein was found dead on Saturday, having apparently hanged himself in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in lower Manhattan. The 66-year-old was arrested on July 6 and pleaded not guilty to federal charges of sex trafficking involving dozens of underage girls as young as 14.

Barr, the top U.S. law enforcement official, vowed to carry on the case against anyone who was complicit with Epstein.

"Any co-conspirators should not rest easy," he said at an event in New Orleans.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr said on Monday there were “serious irregularities” at the federal prison in New York City where Jeffrey Epstein died in an apparent suicide, adding that the investigation into the disgraced money manager’s sex crimes would continue. Jonah Green reports.

Epstein was already a registered sex offender after pleading guilty in 2008 to Florida state charges of unlawfully paying a teenage girl for sex. Prior to his conviction, he had counted the rich and powerful, including U.S. President Donald Trump and former President Bill Clinton, among his associates.

ABC News on Monday afternoon observed federal agents, including FBI and Customs and Border Protection, at the dock and on the grounds of Little Saint James, Jeffrey Epstein’s island home in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"There are FBI agents conducting enforcement operations in the U.S. Virgin Islands," said FBI spokesman Guillermo Gonzalez, declining further comment.

Barr said on Saturday that he had asked the Justice Department's inspector general to investigate Epstein's death.

In his remarks on Monday at the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police's National Biennial Conference, Barr said the criminal case against Epstein was personally important to him and that his death denied his victims the chance to confront Epstein in a courtroom.

"I was appalled - and indeed the whole department was - and frankly angry to learn of the MCC's failure to adequately secure this prisoner," Barr said. "We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation."

Barr did not say what those irregularities were. The decision by officials at the Bureau of Prisons not to keep Epstein on a suicide watch has come under scrutiny.

The facility where Epstein died is run by the federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the U.S. Justice Department.

Even before Epstein's death, public defenders had called the MCC conditions inhumane.

"At the very least, out of a case that's been nothing but tragedy, maybe this will at least shine a spotlight on a facility that has had serious problems for years and years," David Patton, executive director of the Federal Defenders of New York, said in an interview.

Patton described MCC as an "inhumane, cramped place with inadequate staffing, particularly inadequate medical staffing or mental health staffing."

'A TRAGEDY TO EVERYONE'

U.S. District Judge Richard Berman, who was presiding over the case, denied Epstein's bail request last month. A few days later, Epstein was found unconscious on the floor of his jail cell with marks on his neck, and officials investigated that incident as a possible suicide or assault, according to media reports.

"Jeffrey Epstein's death is a tragedy to everyone involved in his case," Berman said in a statement on Monday.

It was not clear why Epstein was taken off the suicide watch. He was in a cell by himself when his body was found.

At MCC, two jail guards are required to make separate checks on all prisoners every 30 minutes, but that procedure was not followed on the night of Epstein's death, according to an official who was not authorized to speak on the record on the matter. In addition, guards are required to make another check every 15 minutes on prisoners who are on suicide watch.

The New York City medical examiner said that an autopsy had been completed on Epstein on Sunday but that a determination on the cause of death is still pending.

Epstein's death also affects civil litigation. In a court filing on Monday, two unnamed accusers of Epstein urged a federal judge in West Palm Beach, Florida, to scrap portions of Epstein's 2008 non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors there that provided immunity to his alleged co-conspirators from criminal charges.

The accusers said Epstein's death rendered moot all possible objections to scrapping the agreement.

The filing came in a long-running lawsuit by alleged victims who said prosecutors violated their rights by failing to consult them about Epstein's plea agreement, which was made on condition that Epstein cooperate with the Florida state prosecutors.

Someone's going to get fired and that will be the end of the investigation.

Perhaps it’s not Bill Clinton with something to hide after all.

Lots of people would like to shutdown the investigation. I think the guilty are equally represented in both US parties as well as hiso's from around the globe. It would be a shame if this got mired down by partisan gatekeepers.

It can all be blamed on video games.

He was involved with a lot of people of influence, money and celebrity.  No telling how many people are feeling better that he's gone.

Some people are giving away their own guiltiness, eg Alan Dershowitz has been crapping his pants on TV while repeatedly declaring his innocence.  See ya in court, Al.

I think some people will be having  'irregular '  bowel movements before this is all put too bed . !

"Jeffrey Epstein's death is a tragedy to everyone involved in his case,"

Wrong. The only tragedy here is the lamentable failure of the justice system to bring this reptile and the powerful pedophiles and perverts for whom he pimped to justice.

Barr's father is the one who hired Epstein to teach at Dalton, even though he was only 20 years old, and had no college degree.

Barr also worked at a law firm that represented Epstein in his earlier case.

I expect "Get your retaliation in first" is the rule he is following.

Put aside the Conspiracy or not issue. We should have been able to ask the ones who almost always get it right.

What odds would Ladbrookes, or William Hill have offered on Epstein living long enough to attend court,  100 to 1 and climbing to the stars after the first "Attempt" I guess.

I think the guy is dirty as hell and a lot of his previous associates were involved too.  His finances and ways he earns or makes money is suspect and hopefully a really good forensic investigation will be done, but I doubt it.  Odd how many Clinton associates seem to die

I guess if I had a choice to live happily ever after, or fear for me and my loved one's lives, I would forget to go check on a child molester as well~not a difficult decision

So he hung himself, died, and then fell onto the floor. If the sheet was tied well enough to strangle him or break his neck then wouldn't you expect to find him hanging in the cell?

The Prison system is operated under the DOJ.

Epstein's alleged suicide is on the same scale as would be the escape of El Chapo from U.S. prison.

The first of the irregularities mentioned by DOJ should be AG Barr's failed duty to guarantee 24/7 monitoring of Epstein in a suicide watch.

But already Barr is attempting to divert attention away from his failed duty to find fault elsewhere in the prison administration. That's close to a shutdown of any serious investigation.

IMO such displays of vehemence hint that the person speaking is trying to distract from their own involvement.  Barr is not a credible person, fully corrupted by his boss.

Yet another boot-licking sycophant.

Many have seen the series 'Orange is the new Black', so we know pretty good what is going on in american prisons.
CCTV that does not work in the moments that count; guards that go bathroom all at the same time; someone forgets conveniently a rope, belt or whatever; guy is taken off suicide watch and  then tatatata: guy commits suicide....
The whole government is relieved, all (ex-)politicians can breathe again.

And now usa wants the world to believe it is all 'coincidence' ????
Yeah sure, with an always-lying president and top sexual predator, normal decent people will not believe this charade for a moment; maybe some trumpettes do, but they don't qualify as decent people anyway...

Heard on the radio today that photos of him dead, allegedly, in the cell and pics of him taken to an ambulance clearly show that the ears are different. Seems they are saying he and the body aren't the same person Geoffrey may be a live and well!!

Elvis is still alive too.

The only thing irregular is that anybody gives a crap for this one. Ordinarily some guy locked in a hole offs himself and it isn't news.

Well there are people who do ‘give a crap’ and those people are not just anybody.

House Republicans have joined House Democrats in a bipartisan request to the DoJ IG to provide answers from his investigation.

Billy Barr needs to start coming up with a credible explanation as to why he recused himself from Epstein’s case and then 24 hours later reversed his recusal.

House Republicans clearly understand there is something extremely damaging to all connected to Epstein’s case, let alone his death, they are ensuring they are on the right side of the story.

Billy Barr has, for seemingly inexplicable reasons, placed himself neck deep in this saga.

Good effort trying to assert nobody ‘gives a crap’, you are entirely wrong.

Get your denial glasses on, the ugly truth will ( despite Individual-1’s best efforts) out!
