The deputy chief of the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) has been indicted for allegedly concealing his assets, some of which are located in London, NCCC secretary-general Warawit Sukboon said on August 15.

Prayad Phaungjampa can be dismissed from NCCC and face criminal prosecution once the Office of the Attorney General submits his case with the court.

Speaking at a press conference, Warawit said Prayad had failed to declare six assets located locally and overseas, some of which are jointly owned with his wife, when he was appointed as NCCC member. The undeclared assets include a luxury flat in London worth Bt215 million.

The other assets belonging to Prayad that were not declared include a bank account containing Bt88 million, a venture-capital investment worth Bt2 million, and three accounts opened with London branches of Thai banks with deposits totalling Bt10 million.

The nine-member commission voted unanimously to rule that Prayad had deliberately concealed assets that should have been declared when he took up his post at NCCC two years ago.

Prayad reportedly filed a criminal lawsuit against Warawit before NCCC made its ruling public. The NCCC secretary-general said he was not concerned by the lawsuit and was ready to fight the case in court.

This is only the tip of the iceberg I mean if they really started to dig deeper not just with this guy but others would be mind boggling

Who is this 'they'?  "They" are all at it, so nobody is in a position to do anything.

any ethics he would have stood aside the minute the investigation was launched

ethics would also mean the PM would have ordered he stand aside

can the undeclared assets, if found to have been the spoils of corruption or unexplained wealth be seized?

No mention of what he did before being a member of the NCCC. Just where was he operating, what was he involved in to obtain such wealth? The concealing is bad enough but surely its more important to discover how he got what he was trying to hide. Or doesn't that matter?

His legal defence will be funded from that little slush account he has tucked away in The Cayman Islands.    Ooops.   Forgot to declare that one as well.

It's a Catch 22 situation. Nobody will ever rise to such a level of public status without playing into the corruption that's prevalent in Thai politics. If you don't play the game, you're not going to be invited into the "old boy's club". But if you can't hide your loot properly, the other old boys are going to use you as a scapegoat to give the appearance that real measures are sometimes taken to combat corruption. It's a tight rope to walk being a Thai politician. You're expected to be corrupt but have to find a way to stay under the radar.

Discriminatory laws like foreigners can't own land here in Thailand should be reciprocal in places like the UK as it would stop all these undesirables from this sort of thing. Ironic that I can't even own 1 rai of land to build a small house on and I bet every higher up government official here, including cabinet ministers, have their own place that they own in the US/UK/France/Italy etc. <deleted> to you all thieving scumbags.

Over 300 million in undeclared assets that they found out - so like half a billion or a billion in total?

Why not call it a day and enjoy life of the money you stole from mostly poor, hardworking people?

It's not enough? What's the end goal?

He could invest it in an ETF and live forever in the luxury hotels in Maledives, eat kobu steaks in New York etc.

But no no no, I no have enough!

None. And the funny part is, he probably doesn’t even consider himself as corrupt.

Corruption is so ingrained into their DNA that they don’t see it as a bad thing when they are involved.
